We’ve been stoked about the chilled out, ambient indie duo Bent Denim‘s gig at The Basement this Saturday, Sept. 9 since we first heard their stellar recent release Diamond Jubilee, and we even gave you chance at winning some free tickets. The half-Nashville based group have been creating densely layered, lo-fi music for the last several years now, and we look forward to getting the chance to enjoy it live with help from like-minded locals October Tooth, and resident lo-fi rockers No Ritual. There’s still time to snag some tickets right here, but at just seven bones it’s a steal of a deal, so don’t wait! For more information about the lineup, read on after the break, and we hope to see you there!
BENT DENIM
Hailing from Nashville and New Orleans (and also claiming New York), Bent Denim, a duo of Ben Littlejohn and Dennis Sager, got their start with 2014 EP Epistolary, after churning up some buzz in 2013 with ambient, lush indie track “Periodic Table.” After a warm reception from the blogosphere, the group further flexed their range in 2015 with an EP of covers entitled Derivative Works, where they tackled tunes by like the likes of Taylor Swift, Blink 182, and Angel Olson, albeit in their own uniquely dreamy, alt pop flavor. That same year, Bent Denim unveiled their first full-length, Romances You, which further honed their sound and set a template for the mellow, trance like ambience they create at live shows. As national acclaim further mounts, the group are continuing to craft wonderful, genre-bending, and personal songs from their respective home cities, and their best effort to date, Diamond Jubilee, arrived earlier this year, marking, perhaps, one of the best under the radar local efforts of 2017. Spreading chill AF vibes everywhere they go, Bent Denim deserve your attention if they’ve somehow passed you by thus far, and we can thank of anywhere better than The Basement to catch them on their ascent!
OCTOBER TOOTH
Another Nashville based duo creating an excellently ambient version of minimalist indie rock, October Tooth appear to be much more mysterious than the headliners. Other than the performer’s names (Zachary Carter Threlkeld and Sam Gidley), some photos on Tumblr, and a note on their Facebook about how they only release music in the month of October, there really isn’t much out there on these guys. However, true to this once-a-year release mantra, they have several auality records out, dating back to 2013 first EP One. So get familiar with their 2016 release, Easy Corners, below, and catch them in the flesh before they release new music (most likely) next month.
NO RITUAL
A little more low fi, garage, and noise rock influenced than the other two performers, while still hitting that dream scape sweet spot at times, No Ritual are pretty new on the scene, releasing their debut EP just this past May. Most of the trio’s songs are hook-friendly, pushed by super tasty, early Sonic Youth inspired, distortion rich guitar riffs. Based on how much we dig their EP, this is a warm up act we’ll gladly arrive on time for; don’t miss them!
Bent Denim, October Tooth, and No Ritual will perform Saturday, Sept. 9 at The Basement. The show is 21+, begins at 9 p.m. (doors at 8:30 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $7.
