Much like the Saddle Creek scene of the early ’00s, nothing about Montclair, NJ’s Pinegrove overtly screams “pop punk,” and, yet with a sound and sensibility at least adjacent to and influenced by that scene, and signed to tastemaking label Run For Cover, they’ve found more press and embrace from the DIY punk community in their seven years of existence than from broader music scene at large, until very recently. Drawing elements of folk and alt-country, all while harboring indie rock flair and the emotional, raw weight of a punk, the group’s sophomore full-length effort, last year’s Cardinal, seemed to be the tipping point in amassing well-deserved, widespread praise, even if still relegated to a niche fanbase for now. Above most any other band we can recall, Pinegrove wound up nabbing more high spots on the broadest, weirdest mix of year-end lists of 2016, managing the difficult feat of appeasing the fans and scene who’ve fervently embraced them since 2012’s self-released Meridian, while also connecting with the mainstream (SPIN), the hip (Pitchfork), and the generally less punk-skewing (NPR). All of that is to say, if you haven’t yet given the fast rising group a crack, or they don’t seem like the type of band you normally listen to, we’d strongly encourage giving Cardinal a spin; it’s the real deal.
After several years of playing house and DIY shows around Nashville, the band graduated to supporting Kevin Devine at The Basement East last fall, and managed to sell out The End earlier this year, propelled by newfound buzz. Currently hard at work on their third LP, Pinegrove have announced lengthy touring plans throughout the fall, and with their latest leg, added a return to The Basement East on Nov. 28, this time as headliners with support from Saintseneca and Adult Mom. Pre-sale tickets are available now at a discounted price, and general tickets will be available Thursday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. CDT right here. Check out a full list of tour dates below!
