By virtue of being an acoustic duo in the emo/indie punk space usually reserved for gang vocals and power chords, California’s This Wild Life are already something of an anomaly, but with their latest LP, Low Tides, they prove even more resistant to being put in a box. Out in support of their latest, the band return to Nashville tonight, July 23 to headline The High Watt, and have tapped two very interesting rising full-band acts, Dryjacket and A Will Away, for support. Tickets are still available right here, so grab yours now and read on for more about the show!

THIS WILD LIFE

Though they formally came together in 2010, Long Beach, Calif. emo/alt/indie punk duo This Wild Life have had quite a transformative journey to become the beloved band they are today. Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso were both drummers when they first met, and collaborated on early pop punk projects, before pivoting to form what would become This Wild Life- originally and briefly a full band. Recognizing that their acoustic material seemed to have the greatest spark, the group honed their sound as a duo, both on guitar and with Jordan handling lead vocals, and found early buzz in the Warped Tour and pop punk scene, originally finding a fanbase through self-released material and praise from punk-leaning press. With production from Copeland’s Aaron Marsh, they released their label debut, Clouded, in 2014 through Epitaph, setting the template for the emotionally resonant, earnest, and personal sound they’re now known for. After relentless touring and increased buzz, the band dropped their latest, Low Tides, late last year, once again working with Marsh, further exploring more eclectic sonic textures and adopting a more mature sound. An engaging and refined live force, This Wild Life are an interesting fixture in the indie punk scene, and a band you should absolutely get acquainted with, if you don’t know them already.

DRYJACKET

Hailing from New Jersey, emo-influenced indie rockers Dryjacket recently released their debut full-length, For Posterity, through famed punk label Hopeless Records. Since commanding our attention with 2015 EP Lights, Locks & Faucets, the mathy, genre-bending group, who were recently handpicked to support Yellowcard’s final tour, have only honed their impressive, punk adjacent sound. It’s interesting to see full bands supporting This Wild Life (the opposite is normally the case), and though Dryjacket are a bit more indie, they’re a great compliment, and an exciting act you should absolutely have an eye on.

A WILL AWAY

Out in support of the recently-released debut full-length, Here Again, Connecticut’s A Will Away have come a long way from their more conventional pop punk roots. After expanding their sound with 2015 EP Bliss, the group, who channel a style in the vein of the pop punk resurgence of a few years ago, where a wave of young and talented bands course-corrected and veered back towards the sound of the early ’00s, after an increasingly uninspired and poppy crop of acts in the latter part of the decade, have managed to balance elements of alt rock and emo, finding an earnest and catchy voice with a lot of substance.

This Wild Life, Dryjacket, and A Will Away will perform tonight, July 23 at The High Watt. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $15.
