We’ve been hyping this one for several weeks now, and we even gave you the chance at free tickets, but now the time has finally come, friends! Local psychedelic soul trio SIMO are back in action, and ready to melt some skulls at The Basement East tonight, April 14 with help from soulful singer-songwriter Devon Gilfillian and blues picker Quinn DeVeaux in the warmup spots. You can still snag tickets to the show right here, but we suggest you hurry, because this will be one of the hottest tickets in town as the clock ticks closer to show time, as SIMO promise to preview new material from their upcoming album. Read on for more about the bands, and get ready for a great show tonight at The BEast!
SIMO
JD Simo, Frontman and lead guitarist of local blues, psychedelic, Brit invasion inspired, and countrified rock trio SIMO, has a simple philosophy when it comes to recording … “We live and die by the take,” he’s said, “We don’t edit, and if there are overdubs, they’re minimal. I want it to be unaffected and pure. For me, the music that always resonates most is when a performance is captured. That’s what I love, and that’s what we go for.” This credo transfers to their live performances, which are always packed to the gills with percussive energy, soulful bass licks, and raw, rock and roll riffs. Other than their stellar early 2016 release, Let Love Show The Way, and an appearance at Live on The Green, we haven’t heard much lately from the the longtime site favorite, so when word broke that new recorded material was on deck, we started salivating at the mouth for a chance to enjoy it live. If you haven’t already, get hip to the resident rock heroes, and prepare to hear a preview of their new record tonight!
DEVON GILFILLIAN
Local, via Morton, PA, singer-songwriter Devon Gilfillian has heavy soul and r&b threads weaved into his wonderful Americana flavored songs. Last year he dropped his self-titled EP, in addition to impressing us at our Acme showcase, and it doesn’t appear he is slowing down anytime soon. In addition to playing gigs all over town on the reg, Devon managed to snag a spot performing some at SXSW, and he also hit the road with Chicago post-funk outfit The Main Squeeze for a few stops on their album release tour; don’t worry, he’ll be back in time to open up for SIMO! With new material no doubt in the works, we’re excited to hear what this year holds for another rising local talent.
QUINN DEVEAUX
With one of the more unique voices we’ve heard in awhile, Quinn DeVeaux is equal parts smooth r&b operator and, in his own words, “dirty spank you” blues. Recalling the golden era from both genres, Quinn’s songwriting is honest storytelling, that grabs you, and pulls you in from the start, painting vivid pictures that stick with you well after the last note has sounded. A talented guitar player as well, he’s ready to show Music City he’s got the entire package, as he puts the finishing touches on his live show, and heads into the studio. Don’t sleep on another talented player who’s eager to get the party started at Basement East.
SIMO, Devon Gilfillian, and Quinn DeVeaux will perform tonight, April 14 at The Basement East. The show is 21+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $15.
