As we recently announced, breakout local alt-country revivalist Sturgill Simpson, whose brilliant third album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth is up for two Grammys next month, appeared over the weekend as the musical guest on the new year’s first episode of Saturday Night Live, following in the footsteps of fellow Nashville acts Chris Stapleton and Margo Price, who both made appearances last season.

Hosted by Rogue One actress Felicity Jones, it wasn’t one of SNL‘s most memorable episodes as a whole, but Sturgill’s electrifying performances of “Keep It Between the Lines” and “Call to Arms,” the former backed by a full 11-piece band, not only saved the show, but utterly stole it. Watch what is sure to go down as one of the stronger musical outings in SNL history below!
