As we recently told you, California indie punks Joyce Manor, who we caught earlier this year at Exit/In supporting Modern Baseball, will return to town tonight, Aug. 16 to headline the famed Blue Room at Third Man Records, along with New Orleans duo Caddywhompus. Prepping to release their fourth album, Cody, Joyce Manor exemplify everything that is right with the modern punk scene, and if their set over the weekend at Wrecking Ball was any indication (review for that coming soon), you’re in for a real treat this evening. We can pretty much recommend any show at the Blue Room, not just for how well they’re curated, but for the special, intimate experience and unbelievable acoustics, but this show in particular feels like a must, if not just for the fact that it’s indicative of a larger trend of giving the pop punk and emo scene the attention it deserves once again. Tickets are still available, so grab them here while they last, and read on for more!
JOYCE MANOR
Since forming in 2008, Torrance, California’s Joyce Manor have, like many of their peers in the new punk scene, managed to achieve both organic, indie punk authenticity and broader critical recognition from outlets too “cool” to cover anything that might be labeled pop punk or emo just a few short years ago (that “emo revival” is really just a revival in interest; the bands never left). Over three fantastic full-lengths, their best and most recent 2014’s Never Hungover Again, the band have honed a knack for crafting driving, loud, resonant punk songs about heartbreak, loneliness, drunken nights, and broken homes, winning over fans and critics with their genre-bending sound and raw honesty. Influenced as much by artists like Weezer and Morrissey as by ’90s emo, early ’00s pop punk, and scene peers like Hop Along, Tigers Jaw, and Title Fight, Joyce Manor are a live force to be reckoned with, forging a reputation that landed them the show tonight in a space not typically associated with anything that could be deemed emo. The band just announced their fourth album, Cody, which will arrive this fall, so expect to hear plenty of new material on full display.
CADDYWHOMPUS
Eclectic New Orleans duo Caddywhompus blend elements of math rock, experimental rock, art pop, and post-rock to form a fuzzy, dreamy sound much bigger than you’d expect from just two people. Hailing from New Orleans and friends and musical cohorts since middle school, they formally came together in 2008, and have released a handful of records and demos since, best and most recently a 2014 EP called Feathering a Nest. Though they definitely have some parallels to Joyce Manor, this band are distinctly unique, and should provide a nice compliment in the Blue Room.
Joyce Manor and Caddywhompus will perform tonight, Aug. 16 at Third Man Records. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $10.
