Mesmerizing world guitarist Bombino is returning to Nashville for a performance with New York based folk-rockers Last Good Tooth at Exit/In this Saturday, April 2. If you’re like me, you were blown away by his incredible 2015 album, Nomad, which was produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach here in Nashville. Today marks the release date for his long-awaited followup Azel, which features a slightly darker and more evolved sound. Be among the first to hear his new music live by grabbing your ticket now for just $15. Click below to find out more about the show, which will likely be one of the best of the year.
BOMBINO
Omara Moctar, better known as Bombino, who we first introduced you to ahead of Bonnaroo a couple years back, is a Tuareg guitarist and singer-songwriter from Niger who made headlines with his incredible second career album, Nomad, which was released in 2013. After being forced to flea from his native country during the Tuareg rebellion in 1990, he was taken under the wing of acclaimed guitarist Haja Bebe. Over the years, he returned to his hometown of Agadez, honed his craft and assembled a band, Group Bombino. When the government banned guitars for being a “symbol of rebellion,” many of Bombino’s musician friends were executed and he was forced to go into hiding.
In 2010, the conflict was over and Bombino was once again free to record and perform his music. His debut album, Agadez, was released in 2011 and earned the interest of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who would go on to produce Bombino’s second LP, Nomad. The album topped both the iTunes and Billboard charts, and earned praise from critics and fans alike.
Now, Bombino is celebrating the release his third career album, Azel, out today, April 1. The record was produced by the Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth, and features a more evolved rock-inspired sound. If you make it out to his show at Exit/In, you’ll be among the first to hear his latest material live.
LAST GOOD TOOTH
Moody NYC-based folk rockers Last Good Tooth are hard to classify as a band. Their sound wanders from plucky, Sufjan-esque melodies to dark and reflective, riff-driven guitar tracks. It’s an experimental but inspired sound that keeps you interested through every musical twist and turn. Make sure you get there early so you can humble-brag about seeing these guys before everyone else.
Bombino and Last Good Tooth will perform Saturday, April 2 at Exit/In. The show is 18+, begins at 9 p.m. (doors at 8 p.m.), and tickets are available for $15-18.
