After sweeping the CMAs, nabbing multiple Grammy nominations, climbing up the charts, and selling out an impressive three nights at The Ryman almost instantly, breakout local country singer Chris Stapleton is enjoying a wave of well-deserved newfound attention. Though the former SteelDrivers frontman stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers earlier this year, shortly after the release of his breakthrough debut solo album Traveller, last week he graduated to late night juggernaut The Tonight Show, where he delivered a powerful rendition of Traveller closer “Sometimes I Cry,” backed by a simple two-man band. Chris is the real deal; an earnest, old school country artist devoid of gimmick or over-commercialization, and seems to be proving his worth and raw talent one appearance and accolade at a time. You can hear Fallon himself exclaim that Stapleton “melted the TV” at the end of his gut-punch delivery of the soulful tune, and we would wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. Watch below, and get ready to weep if you didn’t snag Ryman tickets.
