Earlier this year, beloved heartland punks The Gaslight Anthem announced that would be going on an indefinite hiatus, following the conclusion of a worldwide in support of their fifth album, Get Hurt. Almost immediately, prolific frontman Brian Fallon began work on his debut, full-length solo album, titled Painkillers and due out March 11 through Island Records. Produced by Butch Walker, and featuring Walker on guitar along with Catherine Popper on bass and Mark Stepro on drums, the LP was recorded here in Nashville, where Fallon’s former band also crafted their last few releases. In anticipation of Painkillers‘ release, Brian unveiled its first single, “A Wonderful Life,” late last week. Though not a far-shot from The Gaslight Anthem, the track adopts a more personal feel, and channels Fallon’s folk and alternative sensibilities moreso than his punk roots. The singer is set to headline City Winery on Jan. 17 in support of his new release, backed by a band dubbed “The Crowes” (a nod to side project The Horrible Crowes, from which he’ll also play material) and featuring support from Cory Branan. The standing room show is on sale now, and will run you $22 here. Listen to “A Wonderful Life” below!
