Third Man Records have just announced that supergroup The Dead Weather will release their much-anticipated and long-awaited third album finally this September after half a year of teasing fans with tracks released exclusively to Third Man’s vinyl collecting fan club The Vault and promising a new record despite the members’ busy schedules. Dodge & Burn will have eight brand new songs in addition to the four that have already been released, as well as all kinds of exclusive vinyl goodies for Vault members in conjunction with a special package for the album.
The Dead Weather, my vote for the best supergroup of our time or possibly ever, formed in 2009 after The Kills toured with The Raconteurs. Featuring Alison Mosshart (The Kills) on vocals, Jack White mostly on drums but doing a little of everything, Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes, The Raconteurs) on bass, and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) on guitar and synth, the band quickly released two albums and earned a reputation for their incredible live shows before going dormant again while the members worked on other projects. The Dead Weather are easily one of the most underrated bands in recent years and one of White’s most woefully overlooked projects, mostly because he doesn’t play guitar the majority of the time. So what. They still rock harder than any other band around and are more musically interesting, abrasive, and arresting than the radio-friendly rock and roll of the Raconteurs. The only downside to this album announcement is the firm assertion that they will not be touring in support of Dodge & Burn as everyone in the band is busy with their other commitments. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a secret show at Third Man.
