In a weekend that will be dominated by overeating and drinking and discussing the inflation psi of footballs, there are still some big shows that are happening over the big game weekend.  The pickings are slimmer, but we have some top picks, including a reggae debut and an EP release from one of Nashville’s rising indie rock forces.  Click through to see all of our top show picks this weekend in this week’s edition of TWiN!

FRIDAY

SMOOTH HOUND SMITH
@ Soulshine Pizza Factory | 7pm | FREE | All Ages

Duo Zack Smith and Caitlin Doyle, the creators of Smooth Hound Smith, are Lightning 100’s Local Artist of the Week, and they’re celebrating with a free show tonight at Soulshine Pizza Factory. The duo already have a busy year ahead as they gear up to record their second full-length album, and, so far, this is the only Nashville show on their roster which means now is the time to see them. The blues/folk/soul/roots musicians have a sound that just sort of feels like they’re welcoming you home every time they play, so come on in, order a pizza, and listen to your friends Smooth Hound Smith rock the Soulshine stage.  [BM]

ANDREW LEAHEY & THE HOMESTEAD, SLICK, LUELLA & SOME FELLA’, FURIOUS PRIMATES
@ The 5 Spot | 9pm | $5 | 21+

Andrew Leahey & The Homestead have been a staple in the local rock scene since the release of their self-titled album a few years ago, which first grabbed our attention.  If their recent cover of Black Sabbath’s “Fairies Wear Boots” is any sign, the’ve been up to some good since then too.  Throw in swagger rockers Slick, Luella & Some Fella’ (which we could only suspect means Luella Wood and Tim Carroll) and “hodge podge” rockers Furious Primates, and your plans should be set for the low dough east side show. [MH]

KIND w/ BRAVE TOWN, COLORED PARADE
@ The Basement| 9pm | $5 | 21+

Local indie label Palaver Records is hosting a showcase featuring electro-popsters Kind (feat. Robert Gay of The Alarms, see this post) headlining an all local, low dough show tonight at The Basement with alt-rockers Brave Town and alt folksters Colored Parade. For only $5 you’d be crazy not to check it out! [JR]

MATEJA, GOOD BUDDY, CALEB GROH
@ fooBAR | 9pm | $cheap | 21+

Ambient indie rocker Mateja earns top-billing for another throw down at fooBar. Columbus, OH, experimental rock troubadours Good Buddy and resident folksier Caleb Groh fill out a heady bill. [JR]

SATURDAY

CHURCHYARD, IDLE BLOOM, TOWER DEFENSE, THE GRAYCES
@ The 5 Spot | 9pm | $5 | 21+

We’ve sung the praises of the Grayces to our readers before and, if you haven’t had the chance to check out the hard rock trio yet, now is the time to see what Bleach-era Nirvana would’ve sounded like if fronted by a woman. Local psych pop band Idle Bloom, a rebirth of the now-defunct Fancytramp, is opening along with garage-pop act Churchyard and husband-and-wife fronted post-punk quartet Tower Defense. If you like female-fronted rock and roll, this is a night of four girl-powered bands for dirt cheap.  [JSa]

RAS ADAM AND THE DUBRAELITE, FLORALORIX, DUBSPIDER, MOKIE DUB
@ Track One | 8pm | Free | 18+

If the glorious weather recently has been putting you into a sunny mood, Sounds form the 9th Chamber is definitely the show for you this weekend. Featuring an album release from Ras Adams and the Dubraelite, local favorites Floralorix, the amazing Dubspider, and Mokie Dub‘s first ever public performance, this FREE event will definitely fill your weekend’s reggae quota. This event will be a major step forward for Nashville’s small yet respectable reggae scene, so if you want to support some local music that’s not indie rock, singer-songwriting, or country, look no further. More info here. [JS]

EARPHUNK w/ PROBCAUSE, FLOW TRIBE, CBDB
@ Exit/In | 8pm | $10 | 18+

What’s not to like about funk? Between the deep grooves, phenomenal solos, and general heart to the music, we’d answer that question with a resounding “nothing.” If you agree with us, it’s only logical that you should come out to Exit/In this Saturday to check out Earphunk. This New Orleans based prog-funk act will be joined by Probcause, Flow Tribe, and CBDB for an upbeat, musical evening. It’s gonna be a blast, and we definitely recommend readers come out to this one.  [JS]

WATERFALL WASH (EP RELEASE) w/ THE FUTURE, RALES, KID DEAD
@ fooBAR | 9pm | $5 | 21+

We already offered up a stream of the new Waterfall Wash EP, Foreign Chords, earlier today, but, in case you missed it, you can stream that below, and head out to catch their release party with The Future, RALES, and kid Dead at fooBAR on Saturday night! [MH]

THELMA AND THE SLEAZE w/ HEINOUS ORCA, FOX FUN, AUSTIN HOKE
@ Springwater Supper Club | 10pm | $5 | 21+

Thelma And The Sleaze are one of the dirtiest, funnest bands to see live, an all-female trio playing cock rock harder than any male band I’ve seen in Nashville thus far and their trashy-fun schtick is a perfect fit for the Springwater. Metal duo Fox Fun, ’70s NYC-era punks Heinous Orca, and solo rock and roll act Austin Hoke round out the lineup at one of the west side’s loveliest dive bars.  [JSa]

[BM] Beth McAllister
[JR] Jacob Ryan
[JMo] Jeff Moody
[JS] Jack Smith
[JSa] Jacqui Sahagian
[MC] Matt Cairns
[MH] Matt Hall
[PO] Philip Obenschain
