First announced back in the spring, The War on Drugs‘ upcoming Oct. 13 show at Marathon Music Works has been one of our most-anticipated performances of 2014, which is why we haven’t been able to shut up about it. Centered around indie extraordinaire Adam Granduciel, the group put out an incredible new release, Lost in the Dream, back in March, and, with the addition of former Walkmen member Peter Matthew Bauer to the lineup as opener, this show should practically be a requirement for fans of quality rock music. You can (and should) still grab tickets right here, but, guess what? We’re giving you a chance to win a pair! Read on for details, plus more about the show!
THE WAR ON DRUGS
Formed in 2005, The War on Drugs‘ lineup originally included Kurt Vile (who continued to share band members, including Granduciel, after his departure for several years). Channeling elements of ’80s rock and Americana, The War on Drugs’ sound challenges what is conventionally expected of indie rock, drawing comparisons to artists like Bruce Springsteen with their broad, ironclad craftsmanship. In recorded form, the group are an emotionally vast, instantly relatable, aesthetically unbeatable modern classic. In concert, they’re a transcendent, road-worn, and unparalleled experience that you don’t want to miss.
PETER MATTHEW BAUER
Former Walkmen bassist turned multi-instrumentalist Peter Matthew Bauer is a welcome addition to this bill, and an act we’re eagerly looking forward to catching solo for the first time. Like his former bandmate Hamilton Leithauser, Bauer used his recent solo debut, Liberation, as a way to experiment sonically, staying true to The Walkmen’s indie appeal, while crafting songs more layered and melancholy, and stepping, for the first time, front and center as a surprisingly strong lead vocalist.
