It was almost exactly a year ago that we ran a glowing review of Shovels & Rope‘s sold out show at Mercy Lounge, which, at the time, felt like the beginning of a much-deserved year of incredible hype and attention, largely a late reaction to their fantastic 2012 release O’ Be Joyful. They’ve returned to Nashville since, of course, notably supporting Dawes last summer at The Ryman Auditorium, but the duo’s upcoming performance at Cannery Ballroom on Feb. 26 marks their largest Music City headliner to date. Another fave of the site, Hurray for the Riff Raff will support, and tickets are on sale now. We’re so excited for the show, however, that we wanted to give you a chance to snag a free pair! Keep reading to find out how to enter, and for a full preview of the show!
SHOVELS & ROPE
Comprised of Nashville-raised singer/guitarist/percussionist Cary Ann Hearst and singer/multi-instrumentalist Michael Trent, Charleston duo Shovels & Rope are a callback to classic country and draw heavily from real-deal folk traditions. We might have been raving about them early on, but we’re far from the only ones to notice their immense talent; the duo won Americana Awards for “Song of the Year” and “Emerging Artist of the Year” back in the fall. Known for their multi-insturmental setup, unbeatable harmonies, and unstoppable energy, their live show is something that must be witnessed firsthand; it’s almost punk in attitude, an unwavering, unrelenting force. If you haven’t jumped on the Shovels & Rope bandwagon yet, now’s as good a time as any to start, as there’s not signs of their popularity (or nonstop energy) slowing down any time soon!
HURRAY FOR THE RIFF RAFF
We hosted a listening party for New Orleans folk/gothic Americana rockers Hurray for the Riff Raff, and we’ve been hooked ever since! Folk informed by urban and punk rock origins, HFTRR have carved out a sound all of their own; a cliche phrase, sure, but one that has never applied more. Their latest release, Small Town Heroes, showcases the best of frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra’s writing skills and range, landing with stronger instrumentation, a more focused sound, and a broader thematic range than ever before. We can’t think of a better-suited opener for this show. Get there early!
