Ani DiFranco By Shervin Lainez

Those of you that know me, may think it is strange that I have a very soft spot in my heart for the music of Ani DiFranco, but it is definitely true.  I used to poo-poo the idea of loving any musician that my girlfriend made me sit down and listen to the lyrics describing… well, describing pretty much anything.  Then I saw Ani at the Mountain Air Music Festival in the California foothills in the early 2000’s, and I was instantly taken aback.  I returned from that festival telling my friends to listen to the lyrics on a crappy bootleg (sorry Ani, I promise I never sold it) that I had from that set.  Needless to say, I was sold.  Now, dear friends, it is time for me to ask you to see Ani DiFranco live (no recordings, please) so you can rave about this incredible songwriter and performer to your friends, AND we are giving you a chance to win tickets to see this show for free!

You can click through to preview Ani, as well as, the talented Ari Hest, and find out how to enter to win some tix to the show at Marathon Music Works on Tuesday, September 24th.

ANI DIFRANCO

Ani DiFranco may be a polarizing figure in certain social circles, you can’t deny her incredible songwriting prowess.  She has released 17 full length studio recordings, 30 compilation appearances, 18 live albums, 1o contribution credits, 3 EPs, and has multiple nominations across multiple award platforms all in the past 20 years.  What have you done in the past 20 years?  Me?  I started a music website…  Needless to say, there is something about DiFranco’s songs that touch people, and leave you wanting for more.  The first and only time I saw Ani at that festival in the early 2000’s, she encapsulated the crowd with sweet self-deprecating humor (referring to her guitar playing style as recently graduating from chipmunk to hedgehog) and sincerity (asking the lighting crew to follow a spider web to see how far it extended off the giant festival stage), all the while those playful live songs kept the crowd reeling under the California Stars. Have a look below to get an idea of what I am talking about.

ARI HEST

Ari Hest is a relatively new name to me, but I can’t help but hear The National in his emotive lyrical voice and song writing technique. He’s really a pretty perfect as an opener for DiFranco, and is reason for you to get out to Marathon early enough to be get to know him before he is another incredibly familiar voice on your radio. Have a listen to the politically tinged video for “Business Of America” below to get familiar.
