We saw a lot of you getting your weekend started early at Live On The Green last night, but it doesn’t stop there. We have a lot of great music related stuff going on this weekend including, release shows, interestingly named house shows, and a bunch of tomatoes. All of our picks are below, but, whatever you do, get out to see some live music!
FRIDAY
HARRISON HUDSON
@ Soulshine Pizza | 7PM (5-7PM happy hour) | Free | All Ages
Why do I end up picking Lightning 100’s Soulshine Pizza showcase nearly every week? Well, probably because their local artist of the week kicks ass nearly every week, and this week is no exception. Local indie rocketeer Harrison Hudson is about to embark on Fall tour in support of his new album, Curious, and it looks as though this Soulshine appearance will serve as a test run of sorts before he hits the road in October. If the title track from Curious [see below] is any any indication of the forthcoming album, expect the same crunchy, raw, 50’s throwback indie rock typical of HH’s prior catalog, with some more pop singalong sensibility. I’m certainly curious. [AC]
MODOC (RECORD RELEASE) W/ BLACKFOOT GYPSIES & GOODBYE JUNE
@ Mercy Lounge | 9PM (8PM doors) | $10 | 18+
Indiana transplants MODOC officially release their second album tonight at Mercy Lounge, joined by the Blackfoot Gypsies and Goodbye June, for a full night of homegrown Nashville rock. Purchase of a ticket includes MODOC’s new CD, which we’ve gotten to preview, and we highly recommend. If you weren’t our ticket giveaway winner, $10 is still a great deal for a show with 3 great bands and a killer album. [LS]
GLOSSARY (JOEY & KELLY ACOUSTIC) W/ APOLLO UP!, BOWS & ARROWS, AND BOOTY HOP
@ Exit/In | 9PM (8PM doors) | $5 | 18+
TIM BARRY w/ CORY BRANAN & BRYAN MCPHERSON
@ The High Watt | 9PM (8pm doors) | $10 | 18+
Ex-Avail frontman Tim Barry has been performing solo and touring relentlessly as a folk artist for the better part of the past decade. No stranger to folk/punk movements like the Revival Tour, Barry will be joined by local delta folk singer-songwriter Cory Branan and folk/punk singer Bryan McPherson. Come get folked up! [PO]
TIG NOTARO w/ JOHN DORE, BRANDON JAZZ & HIS ARMED FORCES, TRISTEN, RI¢HIE, MYSTERY TWINS
@ The East Room | 7PM (6pm doors) | Free | 21+
Comedian Tig Notaro is currently filming a road trip comedy series for Showtime, where she travels around the country to perform in fan’s houses. Tonight’s planned show ended up being moved to The East Room due to weather concerns, and is open to the public- however space is limited. In addition to Tig and comedy opener John Dore, the show will include musical support from Brandon Jazz & His Armed Forces, Tristen, Ri¢hie, and Mystery Twins and involvement from Corporate Juggernaut. [PO]
THE PRIVATES w/ ECHO GROUP, WHAT UP ENGLISH
@ The Stone Fox | 9PM | $5 | 18+
This one’s worth the scant $5 for The Privates alone- the Nashville indie rock group’s performances have been few and far between lately. The solid bill of retro rockers Echo Group and the dance-ready What Up, English are the icing on the cake. Don’t miss out on this one! [PO]

SATURDAY
TOMATO ART FEST
Five Points in East Nashville | 10AM – 9 PM | Free | All Ages
We gave you the run down of the musical lineup for Tomato Art Fest when it released a while back. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, perhaps lots of crafts, friends, and libations will. The Art Fest is becoming an institution on the east side, and for good reason… It’s a hell of a good time. You can check out the video for “The One That Got Away” from headliner Panfish below. [MH]
MAN OR ASTROMAN? W/ *REPEAT REPEAT
@ Mercy Lounge | 9PM | $15 | 18+
Once you finish up (read: sober up) after Tomato Arts Fest, there is a very interesting show going on over at Mercy Lounge. Man Or Astroman is one of the more interesting surf rock outfits that we’ve run across in a long time. As an example, just take a look at the core band members, Birdstuff, Coco the Electronic Monkey Wizard, and Star Crunch. See what I mean? The primarily instrumental jams are sure to keep you moving after the long day in the sun. Check out the video below to get an idea of what you might be in store for. Local surf pop outfit *repeat repeat kick things off around 9pm. [MH]
MONA w/ BUFFALO RODEO
@ The Basement | 9PM (8PM doors) | $10 | 21+
With a brand new album, Torches & Pitchforks, under their belts, more press attention and buzz than ever, and an ever-increasing number of television and festival appearances, it won’t be long until being able to catch Mona at spots like The Basement won’t be possible anymore. The Nashville garage rockers will receive support from Bowling Green’s Buffalo Rodeo. [PO]
SHARK WEEK W/ FANCYTRAMP & CHROME PONY
@ 1007 W. Mckennie Ave (The Pussy Palace)| 9PM | ??? | 21+
What better way to close out Shark Week than with….well, Shark Week?! I recommended these guys for a TWiN post back in May, and they’ve only grown on me since. Jaunty, surfy, and slightly sinister, Shark Week are exactly what their name suggests, and just as if you were watching the Discovery Channel special, it’s hard not to be impressed by the raw power. Such Raw Power. In case one ridiculous name isn’t enough to convince you to come out, though, consider that the show is taking place at a house venue called the “Pussy Palace .” Or at least I assume it’s a house venue, because I’ve never heard of it before and the name screams “optimistic college bros live here.” [AC]
THE POOR BOYS
@ 12th & Porter | 9PM (8PM doors) | $10 | 18+
Local rockers The Poor Boys are taking over 12th & Porter for the Iconic Rockwear Birthday Party. I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know that Iconic Rockwear was born, not to mention having a birthday, but I do know that The Poor Boys will rock your face off. You can have a listen to their newest track Peggy (Junker Blues) below while you put your party shoes on. [MH]
THE EASTERN SEA W/ GRANDCHILDREN
@ Exit/In | 8PM | $10 | 18+
FAREWELL FIGHTER, TAKE CAPTIVE THE CAPTAIN, TELL ROMEO I HATE HIM, A RITUAL FOR TWO, FOUR EYES, FORTEANA, CALLER 15, BURN THE BRIDGES, 5th AND GOAL, STAY STILL
@ Rocketown | 2PM | $8/10 | All Ages
Rocketown is throwing a back to school all-day bash with a great lineup of bands, ranging from pop punk to hardcore to indie and more! In case you missed headliners Farewell Fighter‘s record release show earlier this week, for their new album Challenges, which also took place at Rocketown, it’s another great chance to catch them! SUNDAY
OVER THE RHINE w/ ALYS LONGMATE
@ 3rd and Lindsley | 8PM (6PM doors) | $17| All Ages
It’s another Sunday night, and it’s hard to argue with what 3rd & Lindsley and Lightning 100 have going to quell the end of the weekend blues. This week is no different as they bring you Over The Rhine this Cincinatti-based husband wife duo are no strangers to the stage, given that they’ve shared one with Bob Dylan, John Prine, Adrian Belew, Squeeze, Ani DiFranco, My Morning Jacket, Hem, and toured as “adjunct” members of Cowboy Junkies. It’s also a good time for OtR fans to catch some of the new songs from their upcoming album Meet Me At The Edge Of The World which releases on September 3rd. [MH]
