sandyimageYeah. We know. What?!

So The Guardian (and then subsequently Paste and many other news outlets) are currently reporting that none other than Sir Paul McCartney will be subbing in for Kurt Cobain in a Nirvana reunion of Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl (and maybe Pat Smear). Novoselic and Grohl have not really played together in close to two decades aside from the occasional one-off here or there and this has the internets all abuzz with rumors of more reuniting in the future.

According the The Guardian: A spokesman confirmed that Grohl recently asked McCartney to come along to “jam with some mates”. The former Beatle suggested they “just make something up” and found himself playing with Grohl on drums, bassist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear, who toured with Nirvana for the last six months of the band’s career. McCartney said: “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ “And somebody whispered to me: ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

Now McCartney is slated to appear with the surviving Nirvana members at tonight’s Sandy Benefit at Madison Square Garden. You can live stream here catch it on tv tonight or, if you happen to be in a “select city,” in theaters.

The question – is this really a “Nirvana reunion” or McCartney backed by some guys that used to be in Nirvana? Word is they will be playing a new song, making it more like the most unbelievable super group or mash-up-line-up or WHATEVER maybe EVER. I still can’t quite get my mind around the whole thing. For obvious reasons, The Beatles can’t get back together and Nirvana can’t get back together… but put them together and maybe they could spark The Smiths… ok, I know The Smiths “are never ever ever getting back together.” Oh well, whatever, nevermind. All we know is this Macca/Nirvana thing is getting our attention and you probably wanna see what the heck happens when it happens.

Update: Courtney’s more of a John kind of girl and pissed at Grohl (surprise, surprise) for calling it a Nirvana reunion.

Post show update: Kanye’s skirt has its own twitter. You’re welcome.

And now, “Smells Like Eleanor Rigby.” Yep.
