Yesterday, while sweating away at the gym, I caught up on some KEXP (out of Seattle, WA) podcasts, and was frankly quite surprised by The Barr Brothers. It wasn’t until I got back to my computer, and found the videos from that KEXP performance that I knew I needed to post this nuanced, heavily layered folk sound.
The story is a couple of brothers (Andrew & Brad) grew up in Providence, RI, became pretty damn competent musicians, played in a Boston rock band called The Slip, moved to Montreal for a girl, met more musicians, started The Barr Brothers, released a record, toured with Deer Tick, and recorded a pretty special four song KEXP session. That’s it… their entire life in 8 sentence fragments. Nothing else happened, so don’t even bother looking at their full bio here.
Their self-titled debut record flew largely under the radar, but is bound to have more attention after this Deer Tick run and the world-wide attention of the KEXP session. Their current tour doesn’t have them coming through Nashville, but I imagine that will change pretty soon.
You can check out the four videos from the KEXP session below. It’s really pretty special stuff. I hope you enjoy getting to know The Barr Brothers as much as I did.
