The holidays are fast approaching, and, after this weekend, you will start to notice lots of gaps in concert calendars around town. I have quite a few shows this weekend that you should think about treating yourself to before the full blitz of the holidays comes crashing down on you.
First up, The Futurebirds are playing at The Basement tonight. This Athens, Georgia newcomer has a pretty awesome psychedelic alt-country sound. They’re sound is that of a lot of loopy pedal steel along with dreamy vocals that are more often associated with today’s indie rock. I haven’t seen them live, but lots of folks have through tours with Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers and other bands with some Georgia roots. This year they toured with Grace Potter and The Nocturnals in a series of Bonnaroo Buzz shows before performing two sets at last year’s ‘Roo. The one constant theme about these shows is that they are crazy high energy.
They released their self-titled debut EP back in 2009. They were later signed to Autumn Tone Records who released their 2010 LP Hampton’s Lullaby, re-released that self-titled EP, and their newest EP Via Flamina. You can have a listen to that newest EP below.
Things get started around 9pm with two other Athens, Georgia bands, White Violet and Grass Giraffes. I’m pretty interested to hear Grass Giraffes, so it would be worth rolling in a bit early to catch the openers. We have other shows this weekend as well, so don’t blow your whole wad at this one. You have a long weekend ahead of you to get out and see some live music!
