I’ll be honest with you. I’m not that interested in Helmet, and I wasn’t that interested in Helmet when they were relevant in the 90’s. I have a Helmet CD that I run into every few years. It’s been rattling around without a case ever since I knew I had it. I didn’t buy it, and I have no idea where it came from. I doubt it would even play, though I’m not going to take the time to dig it out to find out. So, why am I telling you about this? Because they were (and I assume still are) a loud band that was on a meteoric chart at one point (when I was in high school) during the explosion of grunge music. Still, what’s the point? The point is that they are playing at The End tonight.
For those of you who haven’t been to The End, it’s the new guy’s spot. It is more of an enlarged hallway with a bar and no true stage. It’s the spot that books the band with a couple of blog write ups and a couple of singles. No offense to The End, of course…. every music scene needs one of those. It’s the place where you are going to first catch an up and coming band… and, two years later, you will be lined up outside of Mercy Lounge telling your friends that you “saw [insert band name] play at The End a couple of years ago”. Gasp and awe, you’re so in the know.
Maybe, I’m really more intrigued about how The End will fare tonight than Helmet. I’m not sure the building can stay standing from the sonic vibration that Helmet could lay out in there.
Anyway, enough rambling… If you were/are a fan of Helmet, this could be an opportunity to taste the sweat of your idols. So, if that’s your thing, don’t miss your opportunity. Tickets are $20, and things get started around 9pm. Just get out and see some live music!
ouch.
