This is the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s historic Nevermind album (damn, I feel old). Lots of tributes and concerts are going on to commemorate, and probably the best tribute mix is the one that Spin Magazine will be releasing tomorrow for free. The Spin tribute includes covers by Meat Puppets, Vaselines, Telekinesis, JEFF the Brotherhood, and others. You can listen to Telekinesis’ version of “On A Plain” right now on NPR’s blog.
Deer Tick has also caught the fever. The Providence Rhode Island art rock band have donned the moniker Deervana, and have been touring around the country performing their own renditions of Nirvana songs. Both Deer Tick and Deervana showed up at Bonnaroo this year. I was tipped off to the unannouced 12:30am Deervana show, and I was glad that I got the scoop. Maybe 50 people or so were at the little stage to see the drunken band members howling out some pretty awesome Nirvana covers. I found some videos from some of their performances, and a snippet from the late night Bonnaroo set. I can’t find any that aren’t shaky, but it’s hard to hold a video camera in a mosh pit.
