Songwriters songwriter Cory Branan has spent years honing his craft and (too) slowly building his name around town. We, along with a lot of others in Music City, thought his 2014 release No-Hit Wonder was going to elevate him beyond the bar rooms of the local scene, and, while Branan is surely deserving to be a household name, his funny, poignant songs that dip their toes in the pools of alt-country, indie rock, and punk fit right into the Nashville underground. Cory Branan is set to host a special night at the Basement East on Aug. 12, and you can grab your $10 tickets in advance right here. Born on the outskirts of Memphis, Cory Branan began playing at a young age in local metal bands, but began to honing his songwriting chops in his twenties, and we’ve watched them evolve over his nearly 15 year career. Even as an early Nashville songwriter, Branan’s sound veers through genres on each record, at times it’s a punk tinged rock vibe, sometimes a folky chuckler, and sometimes just a twangy heartstring tugger. It’s his lyrics that really seems to be the common denominator though, and he has garnered significant acclaim from the likes of Jason Isbell, Craig Finn, and countless others that he has toured and collaborated with. We were late to the Branan party, falling helplessly for The No-Hit Wonder, and then joyously celebrating his humble Ryman debut with him. We won’t miss the chance to catch him in the intimate confines of the Basement East, and, if you are a fan of Pavement, The Mountain Goats, The Hold Steady, or pretty much any other great songwriter, you shouldn’t miss the chance either.
