Many music lovers are still in mourning over the passing of David Bowie last month, and local eclectic indie popsters ELEL have released their cover of iconic track “Let’s Dance” in honor of the late great. We knew this cover was in the band’s repertoire from their set last year at The High Watt, and according to bandleader Ben Elkins, “It’s always been one of my favorite songs on the radio. It was a blast playing on tour, so we decided to record it.”
The importance to release the cover was amplified by the loss of the Bowie, as well as the loss of the recording engineer George Tutko (Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Duran Duran), who worked with the band on the cover prior to losing his own battle with cancer in 2015. Elkins elaborates, “We couldn’t believe it when we heard Bowie passed away. His artistry inspired us not only to finish up ‘Let’s Dance’ as tribute to him, but also as a tribute to our friend George Tutko.”
