The “hot topic” in Nashville this week, with the possible exception of some half-dressed Darlins on 8th Ave South, has to be the clash between musicians and the police on Lower Broad late last week. We’ve kinda kept out of this because we consider ourselves friends with these guys, and don’t want to flare any fires while we were working to get them out of jail. Needless to say, it was an unfortunate event that likely has the Nashville Police Department reeling a bit from the public outrage over the video footage that surfaced immediately afterwards.

In situations like this, there are expenses. Getting out of jail is expensive. Lawyers are expensive. And, trust me, Layla’s doesn’t pay enough for a gig to cover these costs. So, it is in the same vein that folks are joining forces around town to help out Luella & The Sun on Friday night, that folks have quickly convened to throw a benefit this coming Saturday Monday night to help out those effected by this ordeal. (Due to the size of the expected attendance, Mercy Lounge and The High Watt offered to host the event over two stages!)  The namesake of the event, Jeffrey Marcom, spent the better part of two days in jail, after being pushed to the ground for asking police why Matthew Paige and Gaelen Mitchell were being arrested (the latter were bailed out soon after the confrontation, and began organizing the event).

We have the full details of the benefit event below, and again, you can grab your tickets for the event here. And, there are lots of the now infamous videos embedded after the jump, as well as, previews of each of the bands that have volunteered to perform.

It all started when police tried to ticket Paige and, his girlfriend, Kim Logan while they were loading out gear after a gig at Layla’s. Logan’s car was double parked because a taxi was reportedly parked in the musician loading zone…

Here’s where things got ridiculous…

Here’s where the news first got involved…

And then it started heating up…

And, here’s the latest, as of July 31st, and includes interviews of Paige and Marcom…

Here’s a rundown of the performers for this awesome benefit. Head out to support local music in the most real way that you can!

  1. a lot of effort going into this… I wish we’d focus on the children who can’t afford cancer treatment at Vanderbilt medical, or the families who actually work several jobs with barely enough to put food in their kids mouths, or the mentally handicapped homeless population. But, ah, arrogant musicians always win because they cry the loudest.

    • Look James, we understand there are other things to worry about, but within the musician community, we are concerned at the lack of respect we are shown, and it is within our interest to remedy this. We give a fuck about what we encounter on an every-day basis. You obviously have never struggled as a “free”, American artist/musician, just as you probably have never struggled in a homeless man’s shoes. If not for musicians, “MUSIC CITY” would have no funds to help any of the people you speak of. Check your facts. Music makes Nashville’s entire operation happen. We SPEAK the loudest because nobody appreciates our efforts…….especially Nashville’s police. This isn’t the first, third, tenth, or even twentieth time this has happened. May we speak out on our behalf please, sir??

AND SAMANTHA…nobody yelled “f— you”. They just used the word “FUCKING” in an indirect fashion. Open your fucking mind.

      • hey Tyler,

If respect is what you’re after – have you ever heard the phrase “you gotta give it to get it?” Refusing to cooperate with the cops, being an ass by shoving a camera into the scene, carelessly banging your gear into someone else’s car are not actions that are gonna get a lot of people to respect you. I’m not taking up for either side, but I was young once, thought all cops were jerks, then I grew up and realized they are just trying to get by too. Yeah, you don’t have to cooperate, you don’t have to be nice, but in general you’ll get treated the way you treat others. I understand this started over a parking ticket, and probably could’ve been solved easily after that had everyone been cool (both the cops and musicians). Just my two cents.

I love the music in this town, but it doesn’t make “Nashville’s entire operation happen” there are a lot of people who work hard in this town in addition to the musicians.
