About No Country

While Nashville is known as “Music City USA”, this is a pretty small market if you aren’t in the country music scene.  Our mission with this blog is to raise awareness about the independent music scene in Nashville by spotlighting the great bands that are budding around the Music City, and to attract more of the national acts to swing through Nashville.

No Country For New Nashville is a team of passionate music lovers who can help to publicize your shows, review your records, and promote your band.  If you are a band, feel free to introduce yourself.  Or, if you are a music nerd like us, we love to hear your suggestions and comments.

*If you are an artist, and we have posted something of yours that you want taken down, just send me a message.

Get out and see live music!

Cheers,
No Country Team

  1. Hi Matt, I am glad and sorry for your current state of affairs. Glad to see new blood (and musical ideas) enter the Nashville area, and sorry that it seems that Music City has kind of let you down. Give it a little time. There are a ton of talented musicians in the “Burg” here that are not all about country radio. Maybe they don’t get the press that the “Stars” get, but nonetheless they are here and kickin’. If you’re into Chick singers, it doesn’t get much better than Bekka, or Jonel, or Ashley. If your into Guitar go catch Audley, or Jack Pearson, or Brent Mason (yes he most definitely plays more than country). Pick your poison and if you ask around, chances are very good that somewhere in town there is someone who can amaze you. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know anyone who been here any length of time who doesn’t have a love/hate relationship with Music City, but it is an excellent place to see and hear things that would literally never happen anywhere else. Give it a little time and you too can be amazed and appalled at your new home.

    • Thanks for the comment, Randy. And, thanks for checking out the blog. I’ve actually grown to really like the music scene in Nashville, and I probably need to update my “About Me” page. I wrote that the day I started the blog! Another thing on the “to do list”…. along with all the new acts that you have recommended! Cheers!

Nashville is country music. It is known for its twang and special way of producing the local music. There are places in Nashville for the type of music you are looking to play but the honky tonks of Nashville are here to stay.

I think the point is that there are plenty of people in and around Nashville who are sick of seeing country music hog all the press and having fans of most other genres of music shuttled off to “specialty” venues as if the music they listen to was a novelty. I bet if you ask 100 people walking the streets of Nashville if they know where the Kings of Leon are from you’d be lucky to get 15% of the answers in the positive. Hell, you’d probably be luck to get that many who even know who they are.

This is just my speculative opinion, but I believe that if Nirvana had come up in Nashville the rest of the world would’ve probably never heard of them.

Jennifer, if Nashville is ever going to be the kind of city its PR is selling it as, certain people are going to have to accept that there are other genres and forms of music that other people rightfully enjoy and have the right to expose and be exposed to.

Growing up in Nashville I have had several musician friends, most who were not country music artist. They learned how to thrive in Nashville. You need to explore a little more and not be so negative about the Nashville culture.

    • Thanks for checking us out Jennifer, and thanks for your comment. You are right that there is a pretty special scene for music around Nashville, and I don’t think I have ever been negative about it. It is actually a pretty simple philosophy that I am bringing to this blog… “if I like it, I’ll write about it.” This helps me keep the blog positive and helps me to do what I set out to do… provide a voice for bands in Nashville.

Nice to see a fellow music “nerd” like myself taking on the task of bringing awesome music to the masses. I appreciate the link back to Gabriel and the Hounds, too. Thanks! Love them.

  5. Cool to see more rockers in Nashville. Even though I play all styles of music rock & Roll has never left!

Would be cool to talk shop sometime and keep rockin’!

I am wanting to take a vacation to Nashville and check out the city/bars/music scene. I am from Portland, Or and love it here and think it would be fun to spend a week in Oct or Nov checking things out. What is a good neighborhood/area to stay in? What are some good venues? Good bars? I don’t listen to country and would prefer indie rock but I will check out anything. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I just moved to Nashville and I am so glad this blog exists! Thank you!!

What are the best radio stations around here? Are there any gems on the AM dial?

    • No Country says:

That’s a good question. I listen mostly to Satellite radio, but Lightning 100 has some good programming locally.

Hello, I represent the Nashville alternative powerpop act Haunted Device. We are releasing Haunted Device’s debut ep on October 31st, and we also have a slot at The Basement’s New Faces Night the day before on October 30th. I was hoping you may be able to do a review of the EP and be willing to mention the show date as well.

Let me know what you think! Hope you like the EP!

    Thanks!

  9. Jack says:

I love this Blog. It is just what we need!! However, don’t be influenced by Lightning 100. They are imitators not innovators.. That station has gotten progressively worse since that shady program Director took over in May. He is disgraceful and those Pawns just cover for him. Those who can’t do—-Do Radio. Again, thanks! Finally some people who know what is What!!

Hey there! I’m a non-country artist here in Nashville with a record coming out in December. I’d love to be considered for your blog! What email can I use to contact you guys with a submission? Thanks!
