PLAYBOI CARTI
Born Jordan Carter in Atlanta, young rapper Playboi Carti initially found fame in the underground of his home city, attracting buzz for online tracks and eventually signing to underground hip hop label Awful while still in his teens. After early collaborations and expanded buzz, Carti managed to catch the attention of A$AP Mob, who poached him for their major label imprint in 2016. An eponymous mixtape the following year, amidst a move to New York, helped boost the rapper’s presence, earning a string of features with fellow young, experimental, and internet-bred acts, and cementing him as an acclaimed and successful addition to the mumble rap explosion, landing high on the charts with his first major mixtape and managing millions of streams and breakout singles. Also an avid fan of fashion, Carti has dabbled in modeling (and now resides in Los Angeles), including for lines from Kanye West and Drake, earning praise for his style, and further boosting a sense of cultural relevance and connection to the youthful zeitgeist with his well-received debut LP, Die Lit, earlier this year. With a refined and contemporary style, youthful attitude, and approachable persona, Playboi Carti is one of the most promising young rappers to emerge in recent years, and as he continues to earn praise for his focused, well-rounded records and loose and engaging live shows, he’s a performer you don’t want to miss.
Playboi Carti and Tim Gent will perform tonight, Nov. 25 at Marathon Music Works. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 6:30 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $40-70.
