A band we’ve long been fans of, St. Louis rockers Foxing have led the emo/indie charge in recent years, emerging as one of the best, most substantive acts in the scene. With earnest, emotionally charged, and deeply personal vocal and lyrical prowess, noodle-y, mathy, instrumentation, and expansive, post-rock tendencies, Foxing are not an easy band to put in a box. What we can tell you though, is that their first full-length, 2013’s The Albatross, is one of the best debut albums in recent memory; haunting, heartbreaking, and gorgeous. Formed in 2011, and after an early stint of DIY touring, the LP enabled them to tour with legendary rockers Brand New, and, in recent years, Foxing have also shared the stage with the likes of Modern Baseball, mewithoutYou, The World Is A Beautiful Place…, and more. Their sophomore effort, 2015’s Dealer, recaptured the raw, vulnerable spark of Albatross, building on its blueprint but pushing forward with more experience and focus, a truly fitting followup. And with brand new third record Nearer My God, Foxing are their most honed and adventurous yet, incorporating electronics and new sonic palates, while keeping their indie emo sensibilities; without a doubt one of 2018’s best releases.
Tonight, Aug. 26, Foxing return to Nashville for the first time in a few years, for their biggest headliner yet, at Mercy Lounge along with Ratboys and Kississippi. Hailing from Chicago and achored by duo Julia Steiner and David Sagan, Ratboys‘ earnest, indie rock sound is laced with country influences; an interesting mix, but one that works incredibly well. The group’s debut LP, AOID, arrived in 2015, and their excellent followup, GN, earned a ton of buzz last year. And based in Philly, folk-tinged indie pop group Kississippi are fast becoming a must-know project, especially since this year’s stellar first full-length Sunset Blush. Any one of these acts would be worth the price of admission, but together, this bill is perhaps the top show of the weekend! Grab tickets while they last!
Foxing, Ratboys, and Kississippi will perform tonight, Aug. 26 at Mercy Lounge. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $17.
