As we announced late last year, rising Long Beach rapper Vince Staples, who made an early splash due to associations with Odd Future and Mac Miller, as well as his own trio Cutthroat Boyz, is set make his headlining Music City debut next month, March 7 at Marathon Music Works with Kilo Kish, on a tour he’s dubbing The Life Aquatic. Only 23, the young MC has been met with widespread acclaim for a series of mixtapes and EPs over the last several years, most recently last year’s Prima Donna, and his debut full-length, Summertime ’06, was one of the most buzzed about hip hop albums of 2015.
Ahead of his upcoming tour, Staples just dropped a surprise new single called “BagBak,” which showcases a grit, focus, and sharp political bent that feels distinctly different from the bulk of his well-known output. A tight, electro-laced, hyper-focused banger, it’s unclear if this is a one-off, or an indication for a stylistic shift we can expect for future releases (Vince promises a new album will arrive soon), but either way, you need to hear it now!
