As we announced back in the spring, legendary ’80s hard rock group Guns N’ Roses are set to play Nashville this summer, July 9 at Nissan Stadium as part of their “classic lineup” reunion run. Pitting guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan with frontman Axl Rose on stage for the first time since the early ’90s, the shows, including a headlining turn at Coachella, have, so far, been surprisingly well-received, managing to capture much of the spark and magic that made the band so legendary in their heyday. While tickets have been on sale for months, we’ve had to wait to learn who would be opening, but, finally, the band have begun revealing supporting acts. While other cities have received names like Alice in Chains, Lenny Kravitz, Skrillex, The Cult, and even Billy Talent, Nashville’s show has added some local flair with the inclusion of breakout country singer Chris Stapleton. An odd choice on paper perhaps, Stapelton nonetheless manages to transcend his own genre, and performs with the energy and earnestness of a rock singer. Take his breakout duet with Justin Timberlake, too, for proof that his style knows no bounds. Not the first only country singer to open for a legendary rock band at Nissan Stadium in recent memory, Brad Paisley was tapped to support The Rolling Stones in the same spot last year.
