Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tonight at Exit/In

Black Moth Super Rainbow are a band that really must be experienced live to be properly appreciated. Performing under very interesting personal stage names such as Tobacco and The Seven Fields of Aphelion, with a stage full of synthesizers and vocoders,  the band has their psychedelic and enthralling sound down to a science. Their typical crowd is just as entertaining, often showing up masked or in costume (very reminiscent of the crowd you might find at a Flaming Lips show). Though their image and sound is very focused and deliberate, Black Moth Super Rainbow’s performance style (at least in my experience from seeing them several times a few years ago) is more removed, letting the quality of their musicianship speak for itself. Their new album, Cobra Juicy, is the product of a successful Kickstarter funding effort and my favorite of theirs yet.

I’m not sure if it’s out of obligation to the many fans who helped Kickstarter-fund this album, but, as odd as it is to say, Cobra Juicy is by far the most accessible release from the trippy electro-rockers. That’s not to say the vocoders and lush synth layers aren’t here, they’re just wrapped in eerily happy, poppy, funky upbeat jams (that, for once, you might not need to take hallucinogens to fully appreciate). Also, that Kickstarter money was clearly put to good use because the record sounds great. If you haven’t seen Black Moth Super Rainbow before, this show is an experience you don’t want to miss! If you’re a long-time fan, getting a chance to see them play new songs from Cobra Juicy should be more than worth your time!
