JOE PUG
As we told you earlier, Austin-based singer songwriter Joe Pug released his third album, Windfall, on Tuesday, March 10. Pug was born and raised in Maryland, began playing guitar in grade school, and formed his first band on a dare from a sixth-grade teacher. Pug and his friends were able to pull together a presentable Foo Fighters tune in time for the school dance and Pug was on his way. Believing that a real band should play original material, Joe began writing songs. After graduating from high school, he attended college in North Carolina but dropped out as a result of his growing passion for songwriting. He relocated to Chicago, where he supported himself as a carpenter while he wrote songs and began working the city’s club circuit. He released his debut EP, Nation of Heat, on his own label in 2008. The first music video from the album is for the single “Bright Beginnings” which premiered on Rolling Stone who hailed it as “dazzling”. Directed by Aaron Brown, the video was filmed in Pug’s adopted hometown of Austin and tells a story that revolves around love, growing older, and the weight of expectation. Be sure to check it out.
FIELD REPORT
Field Report are a folk band led by Chris Porterfield, an American guitarist and singer-songwriter. Porterfield previously played with DeYarmond Edison, a band led by future Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon and three other members who later formed the freak folk group Megafaun. After their breakup in 2006, Bon Iver and Megafaun went on to success while Chris stayed back in Wisconsin. Porterfield, who has a degree in journalism, began writing his own songs and, some five years later, recorded his first album, Field Report, at Vernon’s studio with engineer Beau Sorenson and producer Paul Kolderie. Rolling Stone’s feature on Field Report championed them as “poised to break out in 2012,” which was echoed by several other prominent media outlets. Field Report released their sophomore album, Marigolden, last September and, once again, received much critical praise including from NPR who called it “one of the warmest, most smartly crafted albums of the year…smart, catchy and fascinating, it’s a huge leap forward”.
