Phosphorescent - 620

Just like last year and the year before, we’re making it our mission to help you get acquainted with as many bands as we can from Bonnaroo‘s impressive 2014 lineup.  We’ll start from the bottom and work our way up, paying special attention to the smaller and lesser known acts on this year’s bill. Keep reading for your Bonnaroo Band of the Day…

LEARN

Matthew Houck has been honing his craft for over a decade.  First as an Alabama/Georgia boy, under the moniker Fillup Station, he found moderate success, but it is more likely that you know Houck for the heart-breaking songwriting under his current nom de plume, Phosphorescent.  We came a bit late to the Phosphorescent party, first finding the ever touching “The Mermaid Parade” from his 2010 release Here’s To Taking It Easy, but we didn’t let that slow us down.  We’ve since devoured every album that Houck has penned, and jump at each opportunity to see him.

The past year has offered plenty of those opportunities, Phosphorescent already came through Nashville in support of the widely acclaimed 2013 release Muchacho for a show at 3rd & Lindsley, and you’ll get more opportunities this summer too.  Obviously, the nature of this post means that Phosphorescent will be tackling some big tent opportunities in the early evening on Saturday, but, he’s also playing a show in Nashville the Wednesday before the Roo.  That should dull the pain for those of you not going this year, or you can be like us, and check out the show at Exit/In to ease your Roo “Must See List” just a little bit.  Have a listen to the song that first hooked us, and the delicately layered and just plain beautiful, “Song For Zula,” below.
