Who else is kinda glad that the holidaze are over? While we enjoy family, parties, food and drink as much as the next music blog, it’s also time to get back to the only thing we love more… live music! With the turn of the calendar, we have a bevy of new shows to get excited about. You can get excited too by checking out our staff’s picks in this week’s edition of TWiN.
FRIDAY
LNYX W/ HAUNTED DEVICE AND SOUND CARDS
@ Mercy Lounge | 8pm | $5 | 18+
Synth-driven, four on the floor, electro pop isn’t usually the first genre that comes to mind when you think of Nashville, but we’ve worked long and hard to keep you in the know about the non-traditional Nashville music genres. This relatively new act, LNYX (pronounced “Lennox”), may be news to you, but they aren’t news to folks in the scene. Formed from members of the former international touring act Philmont, this is surely to be a name that you hear a LOT more about in the coming months. Blog favorites Haunted Device and local popsters Sound Cards get things started. [MH]
NAVA HOTEL W/ RALES, GUTHRIE BROWN, AND THE SMOKING FLOWERS
@ The High Watt | 9pm | $5 | 18+
Local blues rockers Nava Hotel dropped a new single, “Casino”, just as the ball dropped on NYE. You can cram into The High Watt tonight to get a taste of the new stuff which will surely be a rocking, raucus, loud ass good time. Bring earplugs and a hefty wallet full of beer cash, cause this is gonna be a partay. Support includes Rales, Guthrie Brown, and The Smoking Flowers. [MH]
SAD BAXTER W/ BEACH BENDERS AND THE RENEAUS
@ The Stone Fox | 9pm | $5 | 18+
Local three piece rockers Sad Baxter bring the jangle with bad ass local upstarts Beach Benders and The Renaus. This is a chance to see the bands that you will be talking about later this summer, so go ahead and get the jump start on your friends. [MH]
CITY COP, COMRADES, SAVE US FROM THE ARCHON, SMALL STEPS, FINDA BRITA, BELIAL
@ The Owl Farm | 9pm (8pm doors) | $10 | All Ages
A healthy mix of emo, post-rock, hardcore, and post-hardcore bands grace our favorite DIY punk space, The Owl Farm, tonight. City Cop and Small Steps hail from Ohio, Comrades from Richmond, Save Us from the Archon from Pennsylvania, and Belial from Alabama- for once no locals on the bill.
SATURDAY
GRANDMASTER FLASH w/ DJ RATE, DEBONAIR, & KENO
@ Anthem | 10pm | $10 at the door (ladies 21+ free until midnight) | 18+ (ladies) 21+ (gentlemen)
Who is really more responsible for the rebirth of vinyl and the turntable than Grandmaster Flash? I mean, dude turned that antique at your granny’s house into an instrument, and pretty much changed the face of music forever. Throw in some of Nashville’s finest purveyors of the original GMF talents, and this is going to be one of those parties that keeps you moving all night. Fellas 21 and up, it sounds like there might be a lotta ladies dancin’ in the house for free too, as if you needed more encouragement… [MH]
MOSELEY W/ CHROME PONY, BLANK RANGE, AND PLASTIC VISIONS
@ The Basement | 9pm | $5 | 21+
If you’re 21+, $5 will land you an evening with the ladies of Moseley, a fresh, deviant femme rock trio of distortion and power. Get lucky! Turn on, tune in, drop out to the kaleidoscopic music of Chrome Pony to be pulled down the rabbit hole to experience Fear And Loathing In Nashville. Their mind-bending, ass kicking 2013 release Lazy Bones (Blacktooth Records) is a magnetic field of Penny Lanes and sweat soaked shags. Blank Range will get bodies moving with their road tripping rock while Plastic Visions may wreak havoc and turn the place into a trendy slamdance party. Live from The Basement, it’s Saturday night! [LT]
CIVIL TWILIGHT W/ FOREIGN FIELDS AND MICAH TAWLKS
@ Mercy Lounge| 8pm | $10 | 18+
South African alt-rockers Civil Twilight are set to bring their layered, epic, melodic sound to Mercy Lounge, backed by Nashville’s own Foreign Fields and Micah Tawlks. With this kind of talent and diversity on one lineup, and for ten bucks to boot, it’s pretty hard to beat! [PO]
BENJI BROWN BDAY BASH ft. THE NEARLY DEADS, FOREVERANDNEVER, THE FINALE, HOT MESS LOVES YOU, & THE DAILY HOWL
@ Exit/In | 7pm | $10 | 18+
10 bones, 5 bands, more rock than you can handle, and all for one epic birthday bash for Benji Brown. Join The Nearly Deads, ForeverAndNever, The Finale, Hot Mess Loves You, and The Daily Howl, all in celebration of Benji’s birth- thanks for being born, Mr. Brown! [PO]
SUNDAY
TRISTEN W/ WILLY MASON
@ 3rd & Lindsley | 8pm (doors at 6pm) | $10 | All Ages
Tristen just may be the hottest artist coming out of Nashville. We chatted with her earlier in the year around the release of her earworm finessed album, CAVES, before it quickly found itself on nonstop rotation with national acclaim including a Top 10 nod from our very own staff. Tristen’s music is a swirl of insightful lyrics driven by her truly unique voice. One moment it’s a vibration of delicate femininity and the next moment, it’s an amplifier of savage pop with a single kiss of androgyny. Check out the video for “No One’s Gonna Know” or stream the audio below to find out why Tristen is beyond worthy. Slow burner UK singer-songwriter Willy Mason will open. Lightning 100 will be broadcasting the show live for those of you who can’t make it out to 3rd & Lindsley. [LT]
SHARON JONES SOUL BRUNCH
@ Grimey’s | 1pm | Free | All Ages
Hipsters love brunch. Hipsters love records. Hipsters love music. Hipsters love everything retro. While Ms. Sharon Jones convalesces from her recent medical struggles, she has decided to Give The People What They Want by releasing a new album on January 14th. You can get a first listen to that one while gnoshing on brunchy bits and mimosas (21+) and perusing the stacks at your favorite 8th Avenue record store. [MH]
