Saturday night… Enough said. I’ll see you out tonight in Nashville!
Do you remember us talking about The Black Angels before Bonnaroo? Well, their show tonight was announced FOREVER ago. This blog is a ripe 6 months old, and I think it is one of the first shows that I put up on my janky little calendar (I promise a new one is coming soon). So, you know that I have been excited about this show for months.
You can read a little from our previous post about The Black Angels. It is going to be a loud, droney, psychedelic rock experience tonight. The only question I have is, why aren’t these guys playing at the Fun, Fun, Fun Festival in their native Austin this weekend? Whatever, their loss is our gain, so I’m not going to complain (whoa, rhymer). I’ve attached a few songs in the (flash required) player below to get you in the mood for tonight. The Black Angels are the first three tracks.
Things get started with some pretty interesting openers tonight, Spindrift and Dead Meadow. Spindrift began as the ever expanding project of Kirkpatrick Thomas in 1992, but really became the band they are today after he and some original members relocated to Los Angeles in 1998. There they recruited the likes of Bobby Bones of Psychic TV, Dave Koenig, Frankie “Teardrop” Emerson and Rob Campanella of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Jason “Plucky” Anchondo of The Warlocks. While this isn’t the same touring band that we see today, it is important for the sound that we hear today. Though they had some forays into electronic music, but the stuff I care about is the spaghetti western stuff that is fitting for their recent writing and recording sessions in the high desert plateau near Joshua Tree, California. There are some tracks for you to check out below. It’s worth getting there a bit early for. Spindrift tracks are 4-6 on the player.
Dead Meadow first got going in the DC Rock scene back in 1998, and churned out some great rock tunes grounded by the guitar work of Jason Simon. The band was originally formed as a three piece with Simon, bassist Steve Kille, and drummer Mark Laughlin. The band continued after the departure of Laughlin in 2002, but are now reunited in their droney rock ways, and are touring with their old pals, Spindrift and The Black Angels. There are a couple of Dead Meadow tracks (7 & 8 ) in the player below.
Things get going at Exit/In around 8pm (supposedly), and you can grab your tickets here. This is going to be a pretty epic triple billed rock show tonight at Exit/In, so get out to see some live music!
