Get To Know: Best Friend

I’ve talked a lot about new Nashville bands, and most tend to have a fairly similar RAAAAWK quality.  There is a lot of great punk and rock coming out of the garages of Nashville, and there isn’t anything wrong with that.  But, it was a nice change of pace when I recently heard Nashville rooted band, Best Friend.

Best Friend is a band of two brothers (Peter and David McCarville) and their high school buddy Brad King.  They all grew up, not so long ago, south of Nashville, and began to explore music together.  Now at the ripe old age of 19, David is the elder of the group (Brad and Peter are 18), and they are in college here in Tennessee.  Despite their youth, these kids have pulled together a pretty cool lo-fi surf rock sound that is reminiscent of some bros that have listened to a lot of Girls with forays into Pavement and Bright Eyes.

We don’t know a lot more about these guys, since they have only been playing together for a few months, but I’ve had a listen to their two 2011 EPs (Mother, Father, Brother, Sister and Going Away) and I’m digging these first cuts.  I have a feeling that you will be hearing more about them soon, assuming, that is, they finish their homework and can figure out how to get past the bouncer and into the club where they are playing.

I don’t have any Nashville dates for these guys right now, but I’ve heard rumors of Knoxville gigs coming up this year.  I know they are working on their first full length, and they promised to sneak me some tracks as they come out.  So, I’ll keep you posted on Best Friend, and will have my eyes peeled for the announcement of any Nashville gigs.  In the meantime, have a listen to the EPs below (or you can download them for free here), and let me know what you think.  I think you’ll be able to hear something worth remembering.
