Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s, Exit/In, Tonight In Nashville

It’s Monday.  I’m dragging.  It was a long, fun weekend, and now I have to try to be creative and witty…. so hard to do….. alright, enough whining.  I think I just found something to pep me up today.  Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s are playing tonight at Exit/In.

This funny named band of buddies from various intertwined past jobs and projects began as a “chamber pop” project for these Indianapolis based artists.  Though, with their newest release, Buzzard, the band has moved into more of a rock genre, but it still maintains the self-promoted mantra of being music that “both the casual music fan and music perfectionist will enjoy”.

In doing research for this blog post, I found their love for Wes Anderson to be particularly interesting.  Wes Anderson is the director that brought us Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Darjeeling Limited, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.  You can find comparisons in the band’s name Margot which was the name of Gwyneth Paltrow’s character in Tenenbaums.  Band founder Richard Evans’ first band was called Archer Avenue, which is the street where the Tenenbaum’s lived.  Violin/lap steel player Erik Kang met the band while performing in St. Louis, with his previous band, Tiara (named after Wes Anderson’s niece).  Even their 2008 release Animal! was named after Wes Anderson’s favorite muppet.  All of this is oddly interesting, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are a good band, right?

Well, they have been putting out records since 2006.  They were named one of the “Top 3 Unsigned Artists of 2005” by XM Radio.  They have received acclaim from Spin Magazine and others.  Conan had them on back in 2008 (see crappy video below).  You can run over here to check out their two Daytrotter sessions.  While you are listening to the player of songs below, head over here to get your tickets for the show tonight.  Doors open at 9.  Get out and see some live music.
