Hailing original from Massachusetts, multifaceted producer, songwriter, and vocalist Jackson Stell began his foray into music as a teen making hip hop beats under the moniker J Beatz, before relocating to California in his 20s, and finding the inspiration to begin making lush, atmospheric, and vibey electronic music as Big Wild. Stell, now based in Portland, would command positive buzz for his early work throughout the 2010s, landing tours with artists like Odesza, Pretty Lights, GriZ, and Bassnectar, and becoming renowned not only for his unique, chilled out sound, but also for his dazzling live show, where he frequently alternates between a variety of instruments. Debut full-length Superdream would arrive in 2019, providing a perfect summation of Big Wild’s prior seven years of honing his sound, and proving to be a commercial success, paving the way for excellent sophomore effort The Efferusphere in 2022. It’s Big Wild’s latest work, the just-released Wild Child, however, which has managed to pique our interest more than anything he’s made so far.
A deliberate effort to rediscover his inner-child, connect with the feeling that made him love music in the first place, and to not take the creative process as seriously, Wild Child marks a major sonic shift for Big Wild, drawing inspiration from indie pop, psych rock, and the sounds of the 1960s, and featuring guests like Phantogram, iDA HAWK, and Nashville’s own twen. It’s Big Wild’s boldest, most personal and uninhibited work to date, and is worthy of a listen even if you’re not as keen on the electronic music scene (Big Wild has never been full-on DJ-based EDM, but this latest effort lands much more squarely in the indie pop space than anything electronic). In celebration of his latest, the multifaceted artist kicks off a tour this week in Nashville, Sept. 4 at Marathon Music Works, and it feels particularly exciting to have a chance to see this new era- essentially a whole alter-ego- debuted live. Tickets are still available right here while they last, but we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to a couple of lucky winners- enter below!
