Raised just outside of Miami, Florida, rapper Denzel Curry was drawn to music and poetry as a child, and began battle rapping at his local Boys & Girls Club, eventually releasing his first mixtape at just 16, and subsequently joining fellow underground Florida rapper SpaceGhostPurrp’s hip hop collective Raider Klan. After exiting the group and while still in high school, Curry dropped his debut studio album, Nostalgic 64, in 2013, inspired by greats like Outkast and Tupac, earning the young artist critical acclaim and online buzz. A couple years later and thanks to punk-spirited single “Ultimate,” Denzel began to break into the mainstream, amassing millions of streams and viral success, continuing across a viral output of EPs and albums, until 2018 third full-length, TA13OO, became the rapper’s biggest hit to that point; a dark, conceptual, intense, and confessional work boosted by huge single “CLOUT COBAIN.” He’s not exactly an emo rapper, though his earnest thematic tendencies certainly fit in with that side of hip hip, nor is he quite a punk rapper, though much of his work is certainly colored by that spirit and tenacity, and he regularly links up not just with his peers in hip hop, but also with genre-benders like Yungblood and Thundercat. With 2022’s focused, confident, and polished fifth LP, Melt My Eyez See Your Future, a perfect summation of his decade’s worth of prior efforts, Curry funneled his penchant for southern hip hop into old school influences, conceptual themes, contemporary underground tones, and even a western flair, drawing widespread critical acclaim and blowing him up to bigger heights than ever. The few years since have been busy, marked by festival and television appearances, high profile collaborations and huge tours with artists like $uicideboy$, and last year’s excellent, impressive sonic throwback King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2, a mixtape (itself a sequel to his 2012 breakout mixtape of the same name) which was later reissued as a proper album.
Out in support of his latest, Curry will bring his high-energy, eclectic, and off-kilter live show back to Nashville April 12 on the Mischievous South Tour, headlining The Pinnacle– his largest Music City show yet after playing Marathon Music Works in 2022 (and most recently returning last year at Bridgestone Arena in support of $uicideboy$). Rounding out the lineup is a particularly stacked group of fellow genre-bending modern rappers: Atlanta punk-spirited and grunge inspired rapper Kenny Mason, southern psychedelic and plugg rapper 454, and impressive New York up and comer CLIP! Tickets are still available right here while they last, but we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan- preview the lineup and enter below.
