It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years now since trailblazing and ionic power pop and alt rock outfit Weezer sprung onto the scene with their eponymous debut (more commonly referred to as the “Blue Album,” due to its cover and to the fact that they’ve released several more colorful self-titled albums since), an album which has, across three decades and 15 LPs, remained their defining work, and a certifiable, generational classic. Transitioning from ’90s indie, emo, and power pop breakouts to certifiable mainstream rockstars in the 2000s to oddball rock and roll experimentalists in the 2010s to, now, well-deserved musical icons who continue to be discovered by new generations of fans, Weezer have remained incredibly active over the years, dropping albums in prolific succession, touring regularly, and managing to find viral moments every few years, whether through YouTube, cover songs, or TikTok.
In celebration of the Blue Album’s anniversary, the band are in the midst of a massive Voyage to the Blue Planet Tour, where they’re playing the full album as well as lots of other favorites (including much of their other ’90s classic, Pinkerton) and headlining some of their biggest venues in years, including our very own Bridgestone Arena tonight, Sept. 17 with some seriously cool support from The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. Though formed in the ’80s, the Lips really took off in the ’90s around the same time as Weezer, and like the headliners, have managed to remained prolific, culturally resonant, and to reinvent themselves each decade (they also dazzled us with a Yoshimi anniversary show last year). And of course alt rockers Dinosaur Jr., though never as mainstream popular as Weezer, are one of alt and indie rock’s most iconic bands, whose seminal ’80s releases had a huge influence on the scene Weezer and their contemporaries sprung out of (you definitely want to show up early to see them).
While, in recent years, Weezer have played venues like Ascend Amphitheater and The Ryman, as well as nearby Pilgrimage Fest, this marks their largest Music City outing in more than two decades (at the former Starwood Amphitheatre, which was actually even a tad smaller than Bridgestone), and their first Nashville show since 2018. After a massive tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy a few years ago, a new wave of interest from a Gen Z audience, and the enduring legacy of their classics like “Blue,” it’s no surprise though to see the rockers ascend to such a large space for this run, and tickets are still available right here while they last. Don’t miss out!
Weezer, The Flaming Lips, and Dinosaur Jr. will perform tonight, Sept. 17 at Bridgestone Arena. The show is all ages, begins at 7 p.m. (doors at 5:30 p.m.), and tickets are available for $49.70-194.60.
