It’s been a decade now since Massachusetts formed electropop and alt rock outfit PVRIS first erupted onto the scene with their buzzy debut LP, White Noise. Immediately embraced by the pop punk crowd, appearing at fests like Warped Tour and sharing the stage with bands like Fall Out Boy, and despite early post-hardcore and metalcore influences, PVRIS have largely been sonically distinct from their peers in that scene, boasting a hard-hitting, synth-soaked, dark and complex flavor of alt pop, anchored by the incredible vocal and songwriting talents of now sole official member and only constant, Lynn Gunn. After expanding their sound with well-received 2017 sophomore effort All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell, the band- who were a trio for much of the 2010s- inked a short-lived major label deal ahead of 2020 third album Use Me, another critically-acclaimed effort which further leaned in to their electropop influences, shedding the more organic rock of their early work. It was around that time, too, that Gunn became the sole focus of promotional materials, and began to clarify that she had long been the band’s primary songwriting and driving creative force, ostensibly reframing PVRIS as a solo project (bassist Brian MacDonald, who was previously presented as a band member, remains part of the live roster). Most recently, Gunn returned with perhaps the most confident, adventurous, and unique PVRIS album to date, last year’s Evergreen, an earnest and unabashedly poppy work that still retains the project’s propulsive, frenetic bite.
In support of their latest, PVRIS took part in The Maine’s traveling Sad Summer Fest last summer, bringing them to Ascend Amphitheater with a big slate of other great acts (before that, they last supported Halsey at Bridgestone Arena in 2021). It’s been a long time though, since the group have played a local headliner (at least five years), making their latest North American tour, which brings them to Brooklyn Bowl Nashville tonight, June 28 all the more exciting! Sweetening the deal, English indie pop group Pale Waves and Mexican electropop artist and producer Bruses have been tapped to support. Pale Waves have been on a prolific run since breaking out in the late 2010s, praised for their poppy, nostalgic, ’80s inspired indie pop, and recognized for their associations with The 1975. 2018’s My Mind Makes Noises was a phenomenal debut, with buzzworthy 2021 followup Who Am I? embracing a more ’90s and ’00s alt pop to even wider acclaim. They took a pop punk turn with swift 2022 followup Unwanted, and are set to continue their prolific tear with a fourth album, Smitten, due out in September. Hailing from Tijuana, producer and eclectic electropop artist Bruses has been reaching a wider audience recently thanks to viral streams and TikTok. Her debut LP, Mostruos, dropped in 2022, and a recent string of collabs have been boosting her profile. This is a killer lineup from top to bottom, and tickets are still available right here!
PVRIS, Pales Waves, and Bruses will perform tonight, June 28 at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville. The show is 18+, begins at 7 p.m. (doors at 6 p.m.), and tickets are available for $52.35.
