What began nearly 20 years ago as a side project for singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Casey Crescenzo during his first tenure in post-hardcore outfit Receiving End of Sirens (who, though currently inactive, have reconvened a couple of times over the years since their 2008 split), New England progressive, experimental, indie rock outfit The Dear Hunter launched onto the scene with 2006 debut Act I: The Lake South, the River North, and has continued to make some of the most interesting and conceptual music around across 17 years and spanning countless LPs and EPs since. Since that debut, The Dear Hunter have been crafting a series of concept albums told in acts, beginning at the dawn of the 20th century and centered around a protagonist known as “The Dear Hunter.” Reported to be a six-part series, the band have also taken lots of detours over the years, pausing after 2009’s Act III to craft a nine-part series of color-inspired conceptual EPs, culminating in 2011 fourth album The Color Spectrum. It was 2013’s Migrant, however, which holds the distinction of being The Dear Hunter’s first album totally without any broader conceptual roots, and divorcing it from that broader pressure resulted in one of the group’s strongest, best-liked, and most personal efforts to date, so much so that the band released an additional EP of bonus tracks, The Migrantions Annex as well in 2013. And more recently, in honor of its 10th anniversary, Crescenzo re-teamed with original producer Mike Watts for a remixed, resequenced, and expanded edition of the album, which totally changes its sonic aesthetic, dubbed Migrant Returned, just in time for an anniversary tour, where the band will play songs from the classic LP as well as additional cuts from the rest of their catalogue. The tour returns The Dear Hunter to Nashville on Nov. 8, for a performance at Eastside Bowl with English math rock outfit Delta Sleep and alt/indie group All Get Out.

In the years since The Migrant, the band have released two more acts in their concept series (leaving just one to go, if they stick to the original plan, though it’s been seven years since Act V), an orchestral collaboration, a couple more EPs, and, most recently another original LP, last year’s Antimai, but, throughout the last decade, The Migrant has endured as one of their defining works. The Dear Hunter, Delta Sleep, and All Get Out will perform Wednesday, Nov. 8 at Eastside Bowl. The show is 18+, begins at 7 p.m. (doors at 6 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $27.
