One of the most beloved and iconic groups in modern punk, Chicago’s Alkaline Trio formed nearly three decades ago, finding swift success in the underground scene thanks to a pair of phenomenal and fan-favorite early albums and relentless touring, before breaking through to broader mainstream recognition with 2001’s From Here to Infirmary and 2003’s Good Mourning, which hit just as early ‘00s pop punk and emo began to dominate the musical landscape. More akin to ‘90s greats like Jawbreaker and early Green Day, with a dash of Misfits bite and macabre, however, Alkaline Trio always remained sharper, moodier, and darker than many of their peers, continuing to evolve and crank out great and relevant releases over the last 20 years they’ve remained in the public eye.
Though the band played Nashville last year in support of Cohered and Cambria at Municipal Auditorium, they haven’t headlined Music City since 2018, the same year they released their last LP, Is This Thing Cursed? They’ve hardly been slacking off in the interim though- frontman Matt Skiba ended a seven-year tenure in iconic punk group Blink-182 last year, when original Blink co-frontman Tom DeLonge rejoined the band; bassist and co-vocalist Dan Andriano continues to play in various side and solo projects like The Falcon, The Damned Things, and Dan Andriano & The Bygones; and though longtime Alkaline Trio drummer Derek Grant departed the band mere months ago after a 22 year tenure, his replacement, Atom Willard, has been a part of some legendary acts like Against Me!, The Offspring, Social Distortion, and Angels & Airwaves.
While it’s unclear when exactly we can expect new music from Alkaline Trio (they last put out an EP in 2020), we’ll always jump at a chance to catch the band’s phenomenal, spirited live show, and you’ll have a chance to do just that tonight, Sept. 10, when the trio return to Marathon Music Works (where they preciously headlined in 2018 and 2013), along with Canadian post-punk outfit Home Front and D.C. garage punk duo Teen Mortgage. Tickets are still available right here while they last!
Alkaline Trio, Home Front, and Teen Mortgage perform tonight, Sept. 10 at Marathon Music Works. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $52.97.
