Since breaking out with a string of buzzy singles in the mid-2010s, Candian-American alternative artist Jordan Benjamin, better known by his stage name grandson, has been an impressive fixture in the rock music landscape. Landing a deal with tastemaking label Fueled By Ramen based on his early online attention, grandson released a string of EPs in 2018 and 2019, before really honing his sound- a fusion of rock, pop, hip hop, and electronic music- with debut full-length Death of an Optimist in 2020. No stranger to Nashville (he last headlined Music City just over a year ago), grandson returns on the heels of his highly-anticipated sophomore effort, I Love You, I’m Trying, which dropped earlier this month and feels like the buzzworthy performer’s best work yet.
A perfect co-headliner for this tour, it’s been nearly a decade since genre-bending artist K.Flay erupted onto the scene with her debut album Life as a Dog, and she’s had quite an impressive artistic journey across three additional albums and several EPs in the years since, shifting from the more hip hop geared stylings of her early work (a musical history which makes her a perfect match for grandson) to broader territories of indie rock, electropop, pop punk, and more. A celebrated live performer, K.Flay has shared the stage with some impressive names over the years, and graced major festival stages, but briefly halted touring when she experienced sudden hearing loss, causing her to go deaf in one ear late last year. In the months since, she’s released a few new tracks and has learned to adapt, and we’re beyond thrilled to see the multifaceted artist- a favorite of ours for many years- back on stage!
grandson and K.Flay will co-headline Assembly Food Hall’s Skydeck on Broadway on May 24 with De’Wayne, another genre-bending must-known up and comer who we raved about last year ahead of Bonnaroo. If it hasn’t been on your radar yet, the relatively new Skydeck might seem like an odd choice for this show, but it’s actually quite a cool new space in one of downtown’s most ambitious new developments, and we’re stoked to see that they’re booking shows that locals might like, rather than simply catering to tourists with more country covers. Snag tickets right here while they last, or, if you’re feeling lucky, we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Preview the whole lineup and enter below.
