Best known for fronting beloved Scottish synth-pop trio CHVRCHES, a group which formed in 2011 and shot to fame throughout the 2010s thanks to albums like their 2013 debut, The Bones of What You Believe, and 2015 followup, Every Open Eye, eclectic singer and songwriter Lauren Mayberry had already been making music for a decade before CHVRCHES took off, learning both piano and drums in her youth, and performing as part of other Scottish acts in her 20s, while also attending school for journalism. Between four albums, numerous world tours, high-profile collaborations, and critical and commercial success, CHVRCHES- propelled by Mayberry’s impressive vocals and clever and earnest lyrical prowess- have become one of the preeminent acts of the last decade, bridging the gap between indie rock, electronic, and pop, and notching numerous viral hits. But by the time the anniversary of their debut arrived, in 2013, Mayberry, who always had more expansive personal influences than the band’s style had touched on, felt the call of a solo project, announcing that she’d begun work on a new record under her own name (and clarifying that, while CHVRCHES are on hiatus for the moment, they’d be returning as a group in the future).
Channeling artists who influenced her in her musically formative years- Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, and Kathleen Hanna as well as ‘90s British girl groups such as All Saints and Sugababes- Lauren’s first solo full-length, Vicious Creature, finally arrived in December, following a year of singles, her first solo tour, and plenty of hype and anticipation. Though it certainly conjures some of the pop and electronic vibes familiar to CHVRCHES fans, Vicious Creature benefits from being untethered from any sonic exceptions, both allowing the singer to explore even more personal and raw thematic focus, and also sonically experiment in everything from electropop to art pop, indie rock to new wave, garage rock to stripped down piano ballads, and much more. Though she’s played Nashville numerous times over the years with CHVRCHES, Mayberry is set to play her first-ever headlining show in Music City on Feb. 22 at Cannery Hall’s The Mil, with support from mysterious New York alt-pop artist Cult of Venus. Tickets are still available right here while they last, but we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Preview the lineup and enter below.
