A cult favorite band of the millennial pop punk scene, and one whose influence and legacy has only seemed to grow in the nearly-two-decades since they first called it quits, alt rock and pop punk outfit Something Corporate have been slowly staging a full-on reunion since news first broke that they’d appear at last year’s emo nostalgia superfest When We Were Young, subsequently adding a handful of further shows, before revealing a full-on comeback tour, and even dropping a couple of new singles for the first time in 20 years. That tour brings the Andrew McMahon-led group to The Ryman Auditorium tonight, Sept. 12– apparently their first Nashville performance since 2003- along with Kevin Devine and Zac Clark; a must-see show for anyone who grew up listening to pop punk and going to Warped Tour (even if SoCo never quite fit perfectly into that scene), and who’s been keeping the band’s small but impressive discography on rotation for the past couple of decades, helping them become bona fide 2000s classics. Limited tickets still remain right here!
After spending his youth moving around with his family, Andrew McMahon settled in Southern California as teen, having already taken to music and beginning to play piano at age 9. He was still in high school he began making likeminded friends and playing in bands, forming what would become Something Corporate soon after, and inking a deal with Drive-Thru Records at 18. Promptly moved up to a major label, the group’s 2002 album Leaving Through the Screen Door and the following year’s North proved huge hits, and despite being more piano-driven alt rock with some edge, Something Corporate fell into the pop punk and emo scene of the time, performing at Warped Tour and with bands like New Found Glory. Towards the end of SoCo (they first called it quits in 2006, and reunited briefly in 2010) McMahon formed new alt rock group Jack’s Mannequin, which would last for three albums and continued success until retiring the project in 2012 (though the bulk of the band stayed on for Andrew’s solo career, making the change more of a semantic one). Since his eponymous 2014 debut, McMahon has been using the moniker Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, which, though a logical evolution of the music he’s been making from the start, adopts more of a poppy and synthy bent and indie rock style. Though he’s no stranger to Nashville with that latter project, and regularly incorporates SoCo songs into his show, there’s just something special about seeing McMahon reunited with his former bandmates (the same guys from way back in 1998), playing only Something Corporate songs for the first time in years. It’s unclear how long this reunion will last (all members are busy with other projects these days), and when or if you might get a chance to see Something Corporate in Music City again, so if you’re interested in this show, we encourage you not to miss out! Enduring, prolific, emo-adjacent indie rocker Kevin Devine and former Jack’s Mannequin and Wildness keyboard player Zac Clark make the lineup even more essential.
Something Corporate, Kevin Devin, and Zac Clark will perform tonight, Sept. 12 at The Ryman Auditorium. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $46-86.
