Though he born and raised in Oregon, and began making music while attending college in California, Nashville is both where singer-songwriter Mat Kearney first felt inspired to pursue music as career (after coming to town on a whim to help his friend and producer Robert Marvin move), and also where he’s lived for most of his adult life. It was 20 years ago that Kearney independently released his first record Bullet, which helped garner wider attention and land a major label deal ahead of 2006 sophomore effort Nothing Left to Lose (which, propelled by its title track, gave Mat his first taste of mainstream success). A subsequent stream of LPs over the next decade- 2009’s City of Black & White, 2011’s Young Love, and 2015’s Just Kids– would achieve even more commercial success, moving from the low-key, singer-songwriter infused acoustic rock, hip hop, and spoken sound of his early days, to influences of adult alternate, contemporary Christian music, and general laid back, adventurous, pop accessible rock, leading to tours with artists like John Mayer, Keane, Owl City, Train, and Mutemath.
More recently, Kearney has refined his folky, pop-accessible, laid back, alternative singer-songwriter stylings across 2018’s Crazytalk, 2021’s pandemic-informed January Flower, and his most recent, eponymous effort Mat Kearney (which Mat co-produced alongside locals Micah Tawlks and Marc Scibilia), eschewing the major label world for a return to indie releases. He’s remained a popular live fixture, regularly playing at home in Music City as a headliner and in support of larger acts, and is renowned for his earnest, spellbinding live show. In support of his latest, Kearney returns to The Ryman Aduitorium, where he’s headlined several times in the past, on Sept. 19, along with Irish folk-pop singer Darren Kiely. Tickets are still available right here, but we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Preview both performers and enter for a chance to win below.
