Versatile, acclaimed, Grammy winning r&b, pop, and soul artist PJ Morton was born and raised in New Orleans, immersed from a young in the city’s rich musical scene by his gospel singer father and pastor mother. Throughout the 2000s, after relocating to Los Angeles, he became an in-demand studio collaborator for his skillful keyboard work, while also transitioning into a solo career beginning with 2005 LP Emotions. He’d find broader exposure in 2010, however, after being asked to join famed pop rock group Maroon 5, initially as a touring player, then as a full-fledged member from 2012 onwards. Though his role in that popular group has undoubtedly provided stability and opened plenty of musical doors, Morton has never slowed down on his solo output as well, inking a deal with Young Money and dropping his major label debut, New Orleans, in 2013, to widespread acclaim, earning the multifaceted artist his first solo Grammy nomination. 2017 followup Gumbo, released after a permanent relocation back to his home of New Orleans, would earn even more high praise, and further boost PJ’s profile as a solo performer, opening the door to further tours, festival spots, and awards recognition.

Though his output has remained prolific, releasing a dependable and always-fresh string of records, collaborations, live albums, and compositions over the years, PJ Morton’s latest, Cape Town to Cairo, might just be his most personal and unique work yet. Crafted during a 30-day journey across the African continent, it’s unlike anything Morton has made before, and marks some of his most sonically ambitious songs to date. That LP alone would mark a big year, but PJ also composed the new Orleans-inspired soundtrack and theme for Disney World’s latest ride, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a feat few artists can claim, and is also set to release his first memoir this fall. One of the most essential, talented artists making r&b and soul music today, Morton has been no stranger to Nashville over the years, regularly bringing his electrifying live show to clubs like Exit/In and Mercy Lounge throughout the 2010s. In 2022, however, he made his Ryman debut, and The Ryman Auditorium is where PJ Morton will return on Aug. 26, with support from Nigerian highlife duo The Cavemen. and comedian Clint Coley. Tickets are available right here, but we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Preview the whole lineup and enter below.
