Though indie folk trio Sons of the East formally came together in 2011 in Sydney, Australia, the group’s roots trace back much earlier, as guitarist and vocalist Jack Rollins and guitarist, banjo player, and vocalist Dan Wallage were friends from childhood, and grew up together playing music. After high school and upon getting more serious in their creative pursuits, they met and added keyboard player, guitarist, and vocalist Nic Johnston to the mix, and Sons of the East was born, initially adopting a banjo-fueled, propulsive folk sound in line with the indie folk boom of the late ’00s and early ’10s on their eponymous, debut EP in 2013. 2015 saw the release of sophomore EP Already Gone, refining the band’s sound and exploring more pop sensibilities, and over the next several years they toured, redefined their exciting and lauded live show, and attracted broader, international attention beyond their early, regional Australian success. Following standalone singles and international dates, the trio returned with a third EP, Burn Right Through, in 2019, taking cues from more retro folk rock and boasting lush, California inspired harmonies. The next couple of years (and a pandemic pause) were spent finally crafting their first full-length, Palomar Parade, which dropped in 2022, broadening the band’s sound even more and helping them earn millions of streams, critical praise, and further international attention. Over the decade from their formation to their first LP, the Sons’ sound morphed from that Mumford & Sons-esque early style to a more mature, confident, well-rounded, and genre-bending ethos, taking cues from the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Bruce Springsteen, and finding that sweet spot between indie folk and alt-country.
Over the last couple of years, Sons of the East have continued to tour extensively around the world, release of string of buzzworthy standalone singles, and to grow in recognition, seeing their fanbase especially expand stateside. Despite boasting a sound that fits right in in Music City, it doesn’t appear that the group have played Nashville many times on their recent U.S. tours, which makes their upcoming return, July 30 at The Basement East, a must-see! Breakout young singer-songwriter and Nashville resident Ben Goldsmith has been tapped to open for the Sons on their latest trek, so get your tickets right here while you can and be sure to show up early. If you’d rather try your luck, we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan; preview the lineup and enter below!
