Though elder millennials like myself might first and forever know him for as the guitarist and co-vocalist for beloved ’00s Canadian post-hardcore and screamo band Alexisonfire (who split in 2011, before reconvening in 2015, going on to release their first album in 13 years in 2022), singer-songwriter Dallas Green has been making music with his even more widely-known solo outlet City and Colour for going on twenty years. A contrast to the more abrasive and frenetic style of his band, City and Colour (cleverly named because Dallas is a city and Green a color) adopted a more stripped-down, melancholy, and folk-rooted acoustic sound with 2005 debut Sometimes, and began expanding to incorporate more instruments by 2008 sophomore effort Bring Me Your Love, which helped the project reach a much wider audience outside of Canada. By 2011’s Little Hell, juggling two successful musical projects had become too much, and as Dallas intended to leave Alexisonfire, the group decided to to disband (only to return a few years later), paving the way for an even more active and prolific run in the 2010s, with several more great albums and tours across the globe, as Green continued to explore influences of folk, alt-country, blues, indie rock, and alt rock, while retraining his signature raw, confessional, and melancholy writing style.
Released last year, City and Colour’s seventh album is called The Love Still Held Me Near, and is another deeply personal and cathartic offering which further pushes the project’s sonic boundaries with more alt rock influence, met with high praise from a variety of outlets, and supported by tours of the U.S. last year and a recent arena run in Canada. No stranger to Music City, Green and his band have performed (and even recorded) in Nashville quite a bit throughout the 2010s, but haven’t been back since 2019, pre-pandemic, at the time in support of last LP A Pill for Loneliness. That’ll soon change, however, as City and Colour returns May 13 to headline The Ryman Auditorium, along with fellow Canadian alt/indie singer-songwriter Georgia Harmer. Tickets are still on sale right here, but we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Preview both performers and enter below.
