One of the biggest rising stars in Nashville’s alt pop and pop punk scene, and a favorite of ours since capturing our attention with a string of great singles several years ago, Charlotte Sands recently released her highly-anticipated full-length debut, can we start over?– a certified banger that feels like the perfect culmination of all of the great music she’s crafted thus far. In support, and capping off a lengthy run of U.S. shows throughout the spring (on a tour which will see her head to Europe next month), Charlotte returns home tonight, April 11– her first Nashville headliner in over a year- to rock Brooklyn Bowl Nashville with likeminded groups Young Culture and senses. Tickets are still available here, and if you’ve ever seen a Charlotte Sands show, you know it’ll be an authentic, high-energy, and, given that she’s local, really special night!
Sands, who originally hails from Massachusetts, has become a massive presence online, thanks in no small part to TikTok, where 2020’s “Dress,” a tune about gender nonconformity inspired by Harry Styles’ much-discussed Vogue cover, first went viral, fueling an uptick in plays and interest across all streaming platforms. Raised in a musical family, Sands relocated to Nashville right out of high school, and initially dabbled in folk, before adopting her current electro-laced alt pop and energetic emo-infused sound that so perfectly suits her voice. Though “Dress” wasn’t her first song to find buzz online, it was, by far, the first big breakout hit, and helped attract new fans ahead of 2021’s great debut EP, Special.
The last few years have been a whirlwind for Charlotte as her fame has continued to grow at an astonishing rate, hitting the road with scene favorites Yungblud, The Maine, and 5 Seconds of Summer, landing a UK stadium show with emo icons My Chemical Romance and a high-profile spot at Bonnaroo, and collaborating on songs with the beloved artists Taking Back Sunday and Underoath. Amidst a constant barrage of new music, Charlotte collected her latest in further EPs, 2022’s Love and Other Lies, and last year’s Good Now, further showcasing her knack for penning songs with a ripped-from-a-diary feeling of personal experiences in love, loss, and longing, effortlessly presented with raw relatability and propelled by soaring hooks and slick production. Though she’s not exactly an emo or pop punk artist, or at least she doesn’t sound exactly like the Warped Tour acts who dominated the airwaves in the 2010s, it’s no surprise that Sands’ vulnerable and frenetic style has resonated so strongly with fans of that scene, making her, perhaps, the torchbearer needed to help push the style into the 2020s.
Charlotte Sands, Young Culture, and senses will perform tonight, April 11 at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $34.90.
