Canadian Dance Punks Death from Above 1979 Play First Nashville Show in Five Years Tonight, Oct. 24 at The Basement East

Formed in 2001 in Toronto, Ontario, Death from Above 1979 (who went by Death From Above for a few years at the start, then again from 2017-2020) first started turning heads with the release of a series of EPs in the early ’00s, before really breaking through with their explosive debut, You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, in 2004. Citing creative differences, the duo split shortly after, only to reconvene in 2011, first for an interment series of performances and, finally, a long-awaited sophomore LP, The Physical World, in 2014, a decade after their debut, remaining regularly active since, and passing through Music City several times over the last decade. The group’s noisy, dance-ready, punk inspired sound has inspired countless other acts since their 2000s breakthrough, and, in their absence, they managed to amass something of a cult following. Now that they’ve been back twice as long as they ever were together in the first place, DFA’s second chapter has become just as vibrant and essential to the band’s history, with 2017 third album Outrage! Is Now branching out from the sound of their first album, to further explore more contemporary, alt rock and heavy stylings, before leaning into their dance punk roots with 2021’s Is For Lovers, perhaps the best work since their reunion.

After a prolific reunited touring period, which saw them play Nashville four times in five years (including a legendary show at Third Man Records), DFA1979 haven’t been back to Music City in five years, but that’ll finally change tonight, Oct. 24, as the duo are set to headline The Basement East with English alt rockers Demob Happy! After more than a decade back together, the novelty aspect of the reunion might’ve worn off, but in that span, Death From Above have really grown beyond the nostalgia of their beloved 2000s debut, and cemented their reputation as a fantastic contemporary dance punk outfit as well. Whether you’re on OG or a newcomer to this important band, we encourage you to get tickets here while they last, and witness their stellar and electrifying live show in person!

Death from Above 1979 and Demob Happy will perform at The Basement East tonight, Oct. 24. The show is 18+, begins a 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $32.87.
